When was the last time you went to the market for shopping and checked out without having to spend a solid 20-30 minutes standing in the queue at the counter? The answer probably lies around never to rarely. We know how frustrating it can be. Think of the situation where you just arrived at your home from work and realized that you are out of groceries but if you plan on going to the market you will probably have to cancel some other plan because you know you will be stuck there for quite some time. Unfortunately, there was no workaround to this problem, Up until now.
What if we tell you that standing in queues for checkout is a thing of the past? No, we are not out of our minds and neither cooking stories. But bear with us, as we introduce to you a revolutionary concept in the field of shopping. Amazon, a leading e-commerce company, is testing a service down at Seattle that goes by the name of Amazon Go. What started as a vision back in 2012 is finally materializing in the form of a store that promises to challenge the current shopping scenario. So what is Amazon Go really?
As per Amazon website:
Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology so you never have to wait in line. With our Just Walk Out Shopping experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout. No, seriously.
Well, that pretty much gives a vague idea of what the fuss is all about. Let’s see how it works.
An Amazon account, compatible smartphone installed with the Amazon Go app are the pre-requisites to this service. As the customer walks in, they tap their phone at the counter (fitted with sensor) and check-in to the store. Surveillance cameras fitted all around the premises scan the customer to verify their identity. Items being picked or put down by customers are continuously monitored by these surveillance cameras. In addition to this, the premises is also equipped with microphones to keep track of the customers’ position as they move around the store. The shelves are fitted with infrared, pressure and load sensors that effectively take note of when an item is being picked up or being put back on the shelf. Amazon has named this smart technology as ‘Just Walk Out Technology’. Also, the sensors keep a track of how many people are inside and where they are. When the customer is finally done with the shopping they go through the exit, tapping their phone on the sensor once more. Shortly after the exit, the customer is charged on their Amazon account and a receipt is sent to their registered e-mail address.
By adopting such technology, the need for men at the counter is also eliminated which in turn reduces the cost of business. The Amazon Go program is currently accessible to Amazon employees only inside the Beta Program. However, Amazon plans to provide public access in the first quarter of 2017.
Amazon Go is undoubtedly a brilliant idea and holds a potential to change the shopping scenario. However, nothing can be stated unless the project goes live and is open for public. We hope that the news has got you as much excited as it got us. Do stay tuned for more informative articles like these and keep following Cashify Blog.
