If you encounter a situation like your iPhone touch screen not working, then your primary goal should be looking for the reason behind this problem. You must identify the reason why the touch screen is not working.
Each smartphone, including iPhone and other brands consists of a physical component called digitizer. The function of a digitizer is to process touch responses from the user. If, digitizer stops functioning properly, then it could be the possible reason behind touch screen not working.
The reason behind iPhone screen not working could be hardware or software related. If the software is not able to interact with the underlying hardware, then the problem will occur for sure. You do not have to worry about these reasons. We will tell you how you can tackle these situations.
It is very easy to troubleshoot such problems. For this purpose, you are not required to have prior knowledge or experience of troubleshooting such problems.
Software problems behind iPhone’s touch screen not working
It is not good to blame hardware each time whenever you face any problem with your iPhone. It might be possible that the reason behind such problems lies in the software part of the device. Troubleshooting software problem is the easiest way to resolve issues like the touch screen of your iPhone is not working.
This problem might have aroused when you had installed a third party application or an application from untrusted resource. Try to uninstall and reinstall those applications and restart your iPhone. Then check, are you still facing the same issue or not?
The following steps will help you to uninstall the application from your iPhone:
- Look for the same application on the iPhone’s home screen.
- Tap and hold on the screen to select the application until all the other icons starts shaking and a cross (x) sign appears on the top-left corner of the selected application as illustrated in figure given below.
- Touch the “x” icon to uninstall the application from your iPhone.
If there is no application open in your iPhone, but you are still facing the same issue. Then, the problem could be related to the iPhone’s internal software. The common way to resolve such issue is to restart your iPhone. But, probably it is not possible to do when the touch screen is already not working. Hence, we will go with another method i.e. hard reset.
Hard reset is generally used when simple restart (turning iPhone off and switch on again) does not work. In order to implement hard reset function, press and hold the power button along with the home button simultaneously. Keep both button pressed until, an Apple logo appear on the screen. Once this logo appears on the screen, you can now unhold the button.
Note: In case of iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8 or 8 Plus, you need to press the power button along with the volume down button together simultaneously for few seconds until you see that Apple logo.
Remember, a hard reset should be done only when you have no other option left. It basically stops all the background processes running in your iPhone. It may cause some software issues (in rare cases). So, try to perform a hard reset now, if you are facing problem with your iPhone touch screen.
Check whether the touch screen is now working or not? If not, then this might be a serious issue. But, you don’t have to worry. Relax; we have so many options to help you.
After the failure of options like hard reset, we are left with the option of restoring the iPhone to its default settings. This function will erase every single piece of information on your device. So, make sure that you create a backup of all the information residing on your iPhone.
To create a backup, you can plug your device into a computer or laptop. If you don’t have any PC or laptop, then you can also go with the option of using iCloud.
Try to perform a DFU (Default Firmware Update) restore other than the traditional iPhone restore. In order to implement this method of restoring iPhone to its default state, you need to plug your iPhone to a computer system and connect with the latest version of iTunes.
The following steps will help you with DFU mode in iPhone:
- Plug in your mobile device to a computer system and open iTunes. [Note: it does not really matter whether your phone is switched off or not.]
- Hold the sleep button along with the home button (in case of iPhone 6s and below) and volume down button (in case of iPhone 7) simultaneously for few seconds (around 8 seconds).
- After 8 seconds, leave the sleep button but hold the home or volume down button until a message appears on the screen. This message specifies that, “the iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode”.
- After initiating DFU mode, the display of your iPhone will come back completely. If not, then try the complete process again.
- Now, you can easily restore your iPhone using iTunes.
So, now we have discussed all the possible software issues. Let us have a look at the hardware issues as well.
Hardware problems behind iPhone’s touch screen not working
If we talk about hardware problems related to the iPhone’s touch screen not working, then the most common and popular reason behind such issue is that you might have dropped the phone. The common sign of a damaged screen is crack. A cracked display can easily tell you that the phone was dropped at any particular point of time or is having a physical damage.
Whenever a phone is dropped, either iPhone or any other brand, the delicate layers of the touch screen got affected. It basically affects or damages the digitizer of the phone’s display. This part is responsible for identifying and sensing the touch input of the users. The image, you see on the display is created with the help of digitiser and the LCD screen. Both these components connect to the logic circuit board of the phone. This circuit board is responsible for working of your iPhone.
During the physical damage, the cords or wires which connect the LCD screen and digitizer to the logic board gets loosed. Hence, this might be the reason behind your iPhone touch screen not working. The Figure below illustrates the image of the Logic circuit board of the iPhone.
You can try MacGyver solution to resolve such issues. You can try to fix this issue by pressing gently (not so hard) the portion of the screen where the cords are connected to the logic circuit board. Remember do not press this portion hardly otherwise you will damage the circuit board. The figure below illustrates how you can press the image so that the problem is resolved.
