PPuF: How an IIT Startup Is Making Smoking Safer

Pollution is definitely taking a toll on the citizens of India, and specifically in Delhi. Amidst all the government drama of pulling cars of the streets to combat pollution, it is the smoke coming from cigarettes that should be a cause of worry. Isn’t that adding to the already suffocating gas chambers we’re living in? It isn’t just your phone you need to secure, it’s you.

IIT To The Rescue

However, an IITian from IIT Roorkee has found a way to make the cigarette smoke people voluntarily inhale almost chemical-free. The student stumbled upon the invention of a filter that smokers could use to restrict the entry of nearly 50 percent of the harmful chemicals, without any compromise on the experience.

He began with extensive research on graphene-based air and water filtration technologies. Simultaneously, in his first year, he established Log9Materials with his parents Vivek Kumar Singhal and Shalini Singhal. Batchmate Vijay Kumar, and his parents were also involved.

PPuF: No Compromise On The Experience

The product works on a nanocomposite-based plug based filter. Put on a cigarette, it strains out around 50 percent of the toxins. This is including tar and ammonia present in the smoke. Priced at Rs 30, the PPuF as it is called, is reusable. It can be used for up to five cigarettes, making it economical as well.

Apart from filtering out the cancer causing toxins, PPuF also saves consumers from side effects like cough, colouring of teeth, bad smell and many other things.

The Road Ahead

Four months after their incorporation in April 2015, Log9Materials received pre-seed funding of Rs 15 lakh from TIDES. For their initial product, BMJ Global Health has touted the market size of smokers at $108 million as of 2015.

At full capacity, they manufacture 1,000 packs a day, but are hoping that to expand this capacity to 10,000 packs a day within six months.
