Apple revealed earlier in its earnings call earlier this month that the iPhone SE was important in the double-digit growth of iPhone sales in India in the last quarter. Some new fresh reports now claim that Apple is also preparing to launch its successor – the iPhone SE 2 in early 2018. This corroborates a much earlier report.
Reports have claimed that the new model is rumoured to be called the iPhone SE 2. According to them, the SE 2 will be manufactured by Taiwanese OEM Wistron at its Bengaluru factory. The factory already has been producing the original iPhone SE.
As per a fresh supply-chain report by Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple will launch the iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of the next year. The reported launch schedule will be in line with the original iPhone SE that had debuted in March, last year. Further, it is being speculated that the new low-end iPhone model is already in the initial stages of production at the Wistron’s facility in Bengaluru.
The facility was specially made for the assembling of iPhone SE models in the early parts of this year. This allowed Apple to enjoy reduced tariffs by adhering to the Make in India initiative, and also reduced prices on the smartphone.
Key To India
Apple’s Indian manufacturing process has already helped Apple maintain an affordable price for the SE in India. This trend should continue with its refresh second-gen version. According to India’s FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) policy, all foreign companies producing goods in the country are mandated to source 30 percent of their components locally. Therefore, the iPhone SE 2 would likely be marketed as a new “Made in India” iPhone by the Cupertino company.
It is also being speculated that the iPhone SE 2 will be targeted at other markets. This could include the rest of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. The phone is said to cost roughly $450 (roughly Rs. 29,200) – which if true would be significantly cheaper than the original iPhone SE’s launch price.
If recent reports are to be believed, the second-generation iPhone SE will have Apple’s A10 Fusion chip. The A10 had earlier been seen on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last year. Alongside this, there would be 2GB of RAM as well as 32GB and 128GB storage options. The iPhone SE 2 has been reported to have a 12-megapixel rear camera sensor and a 5-megapixel front camera. It’ll also feature a 1700mAh battery. Moreover, the display of the new iPhone SE model is quite likely to be identical to its predecessor, which has a 4-inch panel.
