Apple’s 10th-anniversary edition iPhone, or the iPhone X which was eagerly awaited, is finally official. In typical Apple ‘One more thing’ tradition, Tim Cook unveiled the iPhone X (pronounced as the iPhone Ten) at an event at the Steve Jobs theatre, in Apple’s new spaceship campus.
The iPhone X is the first Apple device to feature an edge-to-edge display, which Apple calls the Super Retina Display. The 5.8-inch OLED display, with a 2436 x 1125 pixel resolution puts the pixel density at 458 PPI. There is support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision standards alongside a True Tone display. The 3D Touch introduced back in iPhone 6S is present too, along with a finger-resistant oleophobic coating on the screen. The phone is also water and dust resistant. It’s all of this, in one phone!
Apple’s latest and revolutionary A11 Bionic chip houses a six-core processor powering the phone. The Bionic chip also plays host to the dual core neural engine to support augmented reality.
The First FaceID iPhone
The iPhone, since its first iteration has always had its trademark home button. This time, however, Apple has done away with it to make the phone bezel-less, and some would say revolutionizing the iPhone in the process. The fingerprint sensor is absent too, and therefore Apple is relying on a completely new method of authentication called Face ID.
Face ID tech makes use of a TrueDepth camera module present in the front camera of the phone. The camera creates a 3D mapped image of your face, using a mind-boggling 30,000 dots to map your facial features. The Face ID can be later used to unlock the iPhone and also make payments. The iPhone X makes extensive use of only gestures replacing the functions of the hardware home button, which makes it a truly spectacular device.
The aluminum back ditched for the shine smooth glass back and front enables wireless charging support, using the Qi wireless charging standard.
An Astounding Camera System
The iPhone X has a redesigned 12 MP dual camera setup. The wide-angle lens has a f/1.8 aperture, and both have Optical Image Stabilization. The iPhone X has a quad-LED two-tone flash unit, and the rear camera is capable of shooting videos in 4K. Slo-mo too can be shot at a mind-boggling 240 fps. Got anything else to ask of a phone?
The TrueDepth camera module on the front stores a bunch of sensors along with the front facing 7 MP camera. This astonishing camera module comprises of infrared sensors, q proximity sensor, flood illuminator, ambient light sensor, speaker, microphone, a 7 MP camera and a dot projector. The dot projector will help with Face ID recognition. Any superficial changes, such as a beard, cutting short your hair, wearing glasses would not matter.
Say Hello to ‘Animoji’
Apple’s latest animated emojis, use facial recognition technology and animate the emojis the way you want. The front camera maps 50 facial muscles in real time for this emoji feature.
Astoundingly, the front-facing camera also supports Portrait mode, that was so far limited to the rear cameras. iPhone X’s newest feature – Portrait lighting will also be supported on the front-facing camera.
The processing bulk of this new super powerful Apple iPhone X is handled by the Apple A11 Bionic chip. The A11 does all the heavy lifting for smartphone operations and the camera functionalities as well.
It’s a truly revolutionary device – one engineered to perfection, to deliver an experience close to perfection. Early hands-on experiences from reviewers wax eloquent about the device’s edge to edge display and zippy face unlock feature! We can’t wait to get our hands on one here in India! We’re guessing you can’t either.
