We can expect an exciting new smartphone with a “holographic display” to hit the market in 2018. The phone, called Hydrogen One is manufactured by high-end camera maker RED.
Let’s get the basics out of the way. The phone is reportedly going to have a 5.7-inch display, which uses nanotechnology to switch from basic 2D content to holographic view. In a forum, RED founder Jim Jannard said that the display technology used in the phone would not be lenticular – an approach which has not worked well in the past with other brands.
RED also says that an algorithm will be used to convert stereo sound into an immersive, multidimensional experience.
The phone will have a feature to allow modular attachments, but will put special focus on image capture. What is even more incredible is that the phone will supposedly work with RED’s extensive lineup of digital cinema cameras.
The phone is expected to be shipped in early 2018 with pre-orders possible on the company’s website.
The price is $1195 for the aluminium version. The titanium version is even more pricey at $1595. However, these prices are subject to change at launch time. The modular attachments will also not be available at launch time.
Overall, the Hydrogen One certainly gets the headlines for its display. But at its price, we can expect it to be a powerful device as well, with a very good design.
As with any new phone, plenty of factors will be at play to determine whether the phone will be a success or not. For now, though, there are many reasons to feel excited about this new entrant in the upcoming year. Perhaps excited enough to sell your current device on Cashify?
