Reliance Jio is making headlines again. For similar reasons. The telecom company is likely to launch 4G VoLTE smartphones sometime in July-August 2017.
Shocker #1: The Pricing
Rumours of the price range of these phones has certainly been doing the rounds. It has been reported that the phones would be available for as low as Rs 500. In the first phase, around 10-11 lakh phones are likely to be rolled out.
Shocker #2: Specifications
We’d forgive you for assuming a phone at this price would barely have the power to run itself. But you’re wrong. The Jio 4G feature phone is expected to have 512 MB RAM and a storage space of 4 GB. This is pretty decent at this pricing point. The storage may be further expanded by external storage.
As far as the camera is concerned, the phone is expected to come with a 2 MP camera. The phone is also going to be Wi-Fi and NFC enabled, which is quite incredible.
Lava and Micromax had previously brought out similar affordable feature phones priced at Rs. 3000 and above. But Jio’s pricing will ensure it has quite a leverage in the segment over its competition. The biggest incentive for making these affordable feature phones is to facilitate more video consumption, specially at high speeds.
This will add to the competition in the highly competitive telecom sector, which was made even more stiff by Reliance Jio’s aggressive policy. Although Jio offers smartphones at Rs.3000 under the Lyf brand, this new move is sure to be a game-changer and have a profound impact in the segment.
