Reliance Jio of course disrupted the smartphone market after it introduced the Jio data pack at virtually zero cost. Suddenly, everyone had a lot of mobile data to spare and the competitors also started stepping their game up. Within months, we saw telecom giants such as Vodafone and Airtel introducing super low prices for data and voice calls. To many, this was a clear indicator of how much profit these companies were making before Jio entered the fray.
JioPhone: A Brief History
Now, India is a very big country. It is also economically very diverse. This means that there are a lot of places where people cannot afford a smartphone and therefore cannot enjoy the benefits of Reliance Jio and its network fully. To counter this problem, Reliance Jio unveiled its groundbreaking feature phone – which it called the JioPhone.
This device was actually sold at an effective price of Rs 0, except that you had to pay a sum of Rs 1,500 as a security deposit and the money would then be returned to the user after 3 years.
Reliance JioPhone was officially announced in July last year. The pre-order of the device actually began way back in August, and also the bookings had started later the same month.
Until very recently, the JioPhone was actually only available via MyJio app, Reliance Digital stores, Reliance Jio website, and at Reliance Jio’s retail partner stores. Also, it was seen that e-wallet giant MobiKwik started selling the device recently.
How to purchase?
The JioPhone is now available even on the Amazon store in India. The procedure for ordering the phone is similar to the one seen in My Jio app. You will still have to pay the Rs 1,500 security fees which will be refunded after 3 years. The phone will arrive in a day or two depending on whether you are an Amazon Prime member or not.The phone has a proprietary voice assistant which can be used for many functions such as the option for playing a mirror link on the phone and the TV using a seperate cable which is included in the box
The feature phone is actually 4G VoLTE-enabled. It has a 2.4-inch display, along with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor under the hood. This is backed by 512 MB of RAM, while the operating system keeping the handset running is KAI OS. Also present in the device is 4GB of internal storage, along with a microSD support up to 128GB. Surprisingly enough, you also get Wi-Fi support, a giant 2000mAh battery, and also NFC for digital payments.
A highly unique feature of JioPhone includes the fact that it can support 22 Indian languages along with Google Assistant support. Also before the begining of March, Reliance Jio had announced that it would make available the official Facebook app on its JioAppStore.
