Remember the Harley Davidson Windows 8.1 phone?
The Harley Davidson smartphone showcased at the IFA 2014
The renowned motorcycle manufacturer teamed up with an Italian OEM, NGM (New Generation Mobile) to design and deliver a Windows phone to the masses. It was back in September, 2014 that NGM displayed the phone at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA), an annual consumer electronics show in Berlin. The phone attempted to not only intrigue the people who were loyal towards the fancy brand name and its lineage, but also offered a new option to Windows-phone fanatics in a world where there are very few manufacturers dealing in the OS. The phone started its sales only in Europe initially, before expanding into other regions.
Features that grab your attention
The Harley Davidson smartphone is not one of the most affordable phones in the market. But the design of the phone does manage to keep the most advanced features in mind. It justifies the Harley’s reputation though. At a 144mm (5.6 inches) height, 72mm width (2.8 inches), and a rather elegant 8.5mm (0.33 inches) thickness, this smartphone comes in an attractive unit-design. It packs in a glass front, metal frame around the sides, and a sturdy tough, durable polycarbonate rear-end which feels like leather. The smartphone is equipped with a highly efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 MSM8212 SoC clocked at a frequency of 1.2GHz .
The Harley Davidson phone is about style and substance
The phone’s 5-inch IPS panel TFT LCD screen generates razor sharp HD resolution visuals, thus offering a great viewing experience for its users. Launched at an initial price of €249 in Europe, the smartphone was also about substance beyond style. The NGM-Harley Davidson smartphone came with an internal storage space of 8 GB. This can further be expanded up to 32GBs using microSD cards. The Qualcomm chip features an ARM Cortex A7 processor, a 1GB RAM, and Qualcomm Adreno 302 GPU, ensuring smooth and seamless processing. It runs on the purest form of Windows 8.1 without any added modifications. The processor and the Operating System together try to offer what Harley Davidson has tried to deliver through its bikes: a smooth efficient performance.
The smartphone is powered by multiple connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11, 2G and 3G connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 2.0 Micro-B. It also boasted of a 2000mAh high performance battery providing a long battery support of 12 hours talk-time. The 8 mega-pixel rear camera offers a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels with digital zoom and LED flash. The 2MP camera, on the other hand provided a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The phone also supports Geo-tagging and the GPS.
Where the phone stands as of now
The phone bears a Harley Davidson’s script wordmark on the front and the Harley logo embossed on the back. It caters to the fans, and does make them feel special with the impressive smartphone box it comes in. The phone in packed in a leather box with a large metal plate bearing the Harley Davidson logo. While the phone made news when it was launched, the popularity fizzled out eventually. Although the phone does have a respectable brand going for it, there are several other Windows phones in the market that offer superior features at the same price.
The phone is available in various countries across the globe. Priced at INR 11,590, the phone is sold on eBay in India. As of now, the phone is not as popular as one would expect it to be. However, it was a great attempt made by the motorcycle manufacturer to connect with its fans using an essential commodity.
