Xiaomi is currently expected to launch its next Mi flagship – the successor to the Mi 6, in the first half of 2018. Even though we are months ahead of its formal release, rumours about the smartphone are already surfacing. It will most likely to be dubbed the Mi 7, and is currently believed to have a bezel-less display. This, with a dual camera setup to rival new offerings such as OnePlus 5T and the iPhone X.
A Chinese site called MyDrivers has reported that the Mi 7 will actually feature a 6.01-inch OLED display, which will be made by Samsung. This is actually a significant update over the Mi 6, which had debuted earlier this year with a 5.15-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) IPS display. Xiaomi’s new flagship is also rumoured to have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC, which could most probably be unveiled next month.
Xiaomi Mi 7 may have the first batch of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, earlier even than the Samsung Galaxy S9. However, Xiaomi will not invest in a quad-HD screen, to keep the phone as budget friendly as possible.
No Facial Recognition
While many of the upcoming flagships are planning to take on the iPhone X with facial recognition features, Xiaomi has claimed to stand apart in the competition. The Chinese smartphone maker may use something which is similar to Apple’s Face ID on its future models, but it will not be on the Mi 7 – as per the latest rumour.
Despite not having favoured the facial unlock feature of the iPhone, Xiaomi looks to seemingly use the new iPhone as its reference for designing the Mi 7. The handset is, therefore, said to be having two rear-facing camera sensors with about 16-megapixel resolution. One of them will have a lens of f/1.7 aperture, while the other is not known. Xiaomi could add features like portrait mode that can enhance Bokeh effect and optical zoom using the twin-camera system.
(The lack of) Bezels
The Xiaomi Mi 7 will have 6GB of RAM and 3350mAh battery, similar to the original Mi 6 model. Also, this being a bezel-less smartphone, the next-generation Mi handset is rumoured to have a fingerprint scanner on the rear side.
However, the Mi 7 won’t be the first smartphone by Xiaomi to have a bezel-less display. The Chinese company already developed the Mi Mix and the Mi Mix 2 in the past that set an industry standard for various other full-screen smartphones. But unlike the Mix range that sports a ceramic back, the Mi 6 successor is believed to have a glass back panel. This would, in fact, enable wireless charging on this new smartphone.
The report has highlighted that the Mi 7 will most probably go on sale in China having a price tag of CNY 2,699 (approximately Rs. 26,600). In comparison, the Mi 6 was launched in China at a price of CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 24,600) with 64GB storage and 6GB RAM.
