– Below are the points to consider:

1. Body Type: Plastic|Metal|Glass
2. Colours
3. Water Resistance
Water Resistance
water resistant

– In today’s time, it is important to ensure that the smartphone is water-resistant, esp. when the smartphones are complete displays now if the phone is not waterproof, chances of the phone getting damaged subject to getting wet is high.

– Keeping this factor in mind, most of the brands have ensured that they are offering phones, which are water-resistant.

– If this is a concern of you, make sure to check this before buying a phone

– If it isn’t that necessary, you cannot fret about it.

Colors
colors

– There was a time that phones came only in 2 colors, block or white.

– But, no, longer. These days phones are coming in varied colors. Brands are making not just solid color device but also experimenting with gradient colors as well.

– So if you have a preference, check if the brand you are wanting is offering that color.

Body Type
build

– While selecting the phone, choose wisely between plastic, metal and glass body.

S.No. Body Material  Advantages
Plastic Body Tough to shatter, get scratched, better shock absorber
Metal Body Better protection to inner parts, sleek and classy
Glass Body Looks great and complements the design of your smartphone, however, less durable
Battery

– More the battery capacity, longer will your phone last.

– It is measured in mAh

Below are the 2 things to consider in a battery while choosing the phone:

Type of Charging
types of charging

There are 3 types of charging:

S.No.Charging TypeWhat is it?
1Normal Charging This is the most common type of Battery Charging technique. A wired cable at a normal speed charges the smartphone battery. It takes around 2 hours to charge the battery completely.
2Fast Charging With this, you can quickly charge your phone from 0-100% and in most cases in less than an hour only.
3Wireless Charging This allows wireless charging where you can charge your phone without worrying about the cables. An absolute hassle-free process. The only down-side is that this type of charging is slow.

Battery Capacity

– The time for which your phone lasts on one charge depends on the usage, power efficiency of the processor, screen resolution & battery capacity.

– Most of the smartphones today are coming with 3500-4000mAh batteries, sufficient enough to provide 1 days charge on normal use.

The table below will give you an idea of the battery life basis capacity.

CAPACITYBATTERY LIFE
1500-2000 mAh0.5 day
2000-3500 mAh1 day
3500-4000 mAh1.5 days
3000-6000 mAh2 days

Another thing to check is if the battery is fixed or removable. The only advantage of a removable battery is that in case of damage, a replacement won’t require a complete dismantling of the smartphone.

RAM
ram

-The more RAM size your phone has, the more number of operations it will be able to perform concurrently without facing any lag.

-It is measured in GB.

-The below table shows what RAM size is apt for you as per your needs.

Camera
camera

These days, smartphones are all about cameras.

Having a good camera ensures that you will be able to relive the moment long after it has passed.

A good camera will be able to take pictures that are clear, sharp & rich in color.

The following factors of a camera are important to understand & choose when selecting a smartphone:

1Resolution
2Lens and Optics
3Number of Cameras
4Modes and AI
5Front or Selfie Camera
6Video Recording
Video Recording
video recording

-Smartphone cameras cannot only click great pictures but also record great videos.

-Higher video resolution means sharper, clearer video.

-Smartphones can record in the following resolution:

S.No. Video Recording (Resolutions) Advantages
1 4K Highest resolution videos, no graining effect, consumes more storage
2 1080p Medium resolution videos, consumes moderate storage
3 720p Normal resolution videos consumes less storage in comparison to the above two
Front or selfie Camera
selfie camera

-The front-facing camera is meant for clicking selfies.

-Nowadays, phones are equipped with beautification features, which helps in enhancing the selfies. Beautification mode removes marks on the skin and adds glow to your face.

-Smartphone companies are also adding the front flash which will help in making the selfies better in low light or at parties.

Popup/Swivel Selfie Camera

-In order to remove the notch on the display, some brands are coming up with pop-up selfie cameras, while some of them are creating swivel cameras where the rear camera can be turned into a selfie camera with just a click. Pop-up selfie cameras take a bit longer than usual to pop-out and take the selfie.

Modes and AI

-Some cameras use Artificial Intelligence (AI) which predicts the kind of scenario you are shooting and adjust the settings accordingly. AI helps in taking better photos effortlessly by improving edge detection in portrait shots, face-recognition and the colors also come out good.

Number of cameras

Higher number of cameras allows you to click more detailed pictures with multiple modes.

S.No. Number of cameras Advantages
1 Dual Camera Different combinations of the lens in different phones: Depth sensor, monochrome sensor, telephoto lens, wide or super wide-angle lens.
2 Triple Camera Zoom, wide-angle and black and white sensor for artistic pictures
3 Quad Camera Zoom, ultra-wide, and regular lens; the fourth camera is usually a depth sensor or macro-lens.

Lens & Optics

-Lens helps to focus the light on the camera, which leads to a sharp image.

-A good lens & optics helps in capturing clear & sharp images.

-Usually, smartphone cameras use plastic lenses but expensive smartphone cameras are packed with glass lenses that produce high-quality images.

-Some smartphone manufacturers also collaborate with leading DSLR manufacturers like Leica, Sony, Zeiss to get the best lenses on the smartphone.

Display
display

First impression lasts. Yes, it’s true in the case of phones too. A good display ensures smooth usage & gives comfort to your eyes & hands too. There are 5 things that one needs to keep in mind:

1Screen size
2Aspect Ratio & Bezel-less display
3Display Type
4Resolution
5Screen Protection Technology
Resolution
display resolution

The higher the resolution the clearer the picture will be. This is measured in terms of width x height.

S.No.  Resolution  Advantage  Usage
HD  It’s basic 720×1280 pixels display, which is average and does not provide a good viewing experience.  Basic usage without much video viewing or gaming
FullHD (FHD)  FHD display shows 1080×1920 pixels which look good and the content appears clear.  Great for viewing videos, movies and gaming
QuadHD (QHD)  QHD is currently the best display you can have on your smartphone. It shows 1440×2560 pixels.  Best suited for HD gaming and streaming experience

Screen Protection Technology
screen protection

-Smartphone displays are usually delicate and can break if they fall.

-Also, displays are the most expensive part of the smartphone.

-Thus, companies are now investing in technologies that will allow the display to take impact of the fall without causing any irreparable damage.

-There are types of technologies available that ensure that the smartphone screen does not shatter into bits in case the phone drops accidently. Below is the list of such protection technologies available:

S.No. Screen protection Technology Advantage
Sapphire It’s the toughest glass available in the market, however, they are rare and expensive.
Asahi Dragontrail This glass is more common among mid-tier Chinese-manufactured phones.
Gorilla GlassGorilla Glass is made to be scratch-resistant and drop-resistant. However, it doesn’t mean they can’t shatter or scratch.
Display Type

The better display allows more vibrant colours thus richer viewing experience. Below are the types available:

S.No.  Display Type  Usage
IPS-LCD  Provide better viewing angles. Found in most of the phones today
OLED  Shows vibrant colors and contrast. Provide a better battery life.
TFT-LCD  They are the most affordable display technology available but offers poor viewing angles. Also, these are now no longer used
4 AMOLED AMOLED touch screens are brighter and increase battery life but are difficult to see in direct sunlight with shorter lifespan.
5 SUPER-AMOLED Super AMOLED have brighter screens & also improves viewability in sunlight.
6 RETINA DISPLAY Apple smartphones have a display different from the one mentioned above. Retina display is an advance LCD technology. It works to make text & image crisp so that pixels are not individually visible to the eye.
Aspect Ratio & Bezel-Less Display
aspect ratio

-Bigger screen size means the phone will be bigger & heavier.

-Smartphone brands have addressed this concern by introducing the bezel-less display, which ensures the same phone size extra screen space.

-Some phone brands have come up with ‘notch displays’, which use the full screen without increasing the actual size of the phones.

-Notch comes in various shapes and sizes and can house cameras, sensors, etc.

S.No. Aspect Ratio Screen size Type Ideal for
16:9 5.5 inch Normal Small and light phones, cheaper, ideal for basic use
18:9 6 inch Bezel-less/ Notch display The most commonly used screen size currently, expensive and heavier, ideal for playing games, watching movies, etc.
19:9 6.3 inch Bezel-less/ Notch display  Ideal for gaming, office work, using multiple tabs, etc. heavier and very expensive.

Aspect ratio:

-This is the ratio of height to width of a screen.

-16:9 is the standard ratio but nowadays we are also getting phones with an aspect ratio of 18:9 & 19:9, which reduces the width but increases the height thus making it easier to hold.

Screen Size
screen size

– The bigger screen gives a better viewing experience. But also note that bigger screens lead to bigger phone size, which may be difficult to hold.

-It is measured in inches & cm.

-The below table explains the positives & negatives of various available sizes.

Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of pixels your camera has, which means the amount of detail that the camera can capture.

It is measured in megapixels (MP). A megapixel means one million pixels.

The higher the number of MP, the higher will be the resolution, and the more details you will be able to capture i.e. you will be able to zoom the image more without it getting pixelated.

A camera with higher resolution will be able to capture images with more details & sharpness.

However, just a high MP does not ensure perfect clicks. There are other contributing factors as well.

Operating System (OS)

-First & foremost is the OS.

-This mostly depends on the smartphone environment that you are comfortable with.

-If you are an Apple fan, the choice will be Apple.

-If android excites you, then you will have a range of smartphones to choose from.

Here are the types of OS available:

S.No. Operating System Advantage
Android Cheap, better performance for low budget phones, customization, multitasking, ease of notifications, etc.
Stock Android Less duplication and bloatware, best performance, secure, etc.
iOS Delivers excellent performance, generates less heat than Android or Stock Android, best gaming experience.

-In addition to this, some smartphone makers add their layers on top of stock Android OS and these are known as Custom Android Versions. -For example EMUI (Huawei), MIUI (Xiaomi), etc. Usually, phones with stock android deliver the best performance.

While choosing an OS, you need to be mindful of the following things:

1. Affordability

2. Apps available

3. Security

4. Updates

5. Customizability

6. Accessibility

1.1 Affordability:

No doubt that Apple is the most expensive product out there. If you are keen to opt for a phone that won’t be too heavy on your pockets, best to look for your desired features in an android phone. But if you’re set on iPhone & won’t opt for anything other than Apple, you surely can go for it. Though expensive, they give the most amazing interface to the end-user.

affordability

1.2 Apps available:

While you will find that most of the free apps that are there on Android are present on iOS as well, but if you are a hardcore gamer and love to explore & play new games, opting for iOS is the best option since there are some of the best gaming apps that are only available in the App Store. The reason mostly is that the iOS interface provides a better gaming experience compared to the varied Android environment.

apps available

1.3 Security:

Though, both Android & Apple are secure platforms. There is no threat of malware if you are downloading via the specific stores (Google Play Store & App Store). But when it comes to deep check of apps, Apple is much more secure & difficult to breach. Thus, if you’re looking for high level security & privacy, you should opt for iOS.

security

1.4 Updates:

iOS has a better update mechanism. Most of their phone models will be running on the latest versions of OS. The same is not true for Android, since the older phones are not eligible for updates, thus making them vulnerable to malware attacks. Android provides security patches for up to 2 years only. So if you want to stick to your phone for a while, investing in an iPhone is a better option.

android updates

1.5 Customizability:

As a user, Android gives you more flexibility to customise the UI of the phone. You can modify the way apps are listed, the layout of the home screens, adding multiple widgets. And many more. iOS, however, does not provide such customisation. If you’re looking for a phone that lets you customise it the way you want, going for an Android will be the right choice.

customizations

1.6 Accessibility:

When it comes to accessibility, iOS is far easier, simpler to use, for one reason that it works the same across devices & models. This is not true when it comes to Android devices, because each Android phone can work and operate in a different way thus making it not very easy to seamlessly move from one device to another. If you’re looking for a phone that allows seamless usage across devices, going for iOS is the best option.
