Description

First released in Taiwan in May 2016, HTC Desire 830 is a predecessor to HTC Desire 628. This is a phone falls in the midrange spectrum and is an attempt on the company’s part to keep its customer base in this spectrum, intact. The selling point of this phone (as HTC claims) is its camera. Our opinion might differ a bit here, though.

The phone weighs 156g, has a thickness of 7.8mm, and runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with Mediatek MT6795 Helio X10 (28 nm). It has a metal body and features a 5.5 inch FHD display, with a Super LCD capacitive screen that comes with Corning Gorilla Glass. It has a 4 MP, f/2.0, 27mm (wide) front camera and has a 13 MP, f/2.0, 28mm (wide) rear camera with autofocus and optical image stabilization (OIS). It measures 6.2 x 3.11 x 0.31 inches, has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, and has a non-removable 2800 mAh Li-ion battery. It also has a PowerVR G6200 GPU for a good gaming experience.

Highlights

What captured hearts: the audio capabilities. How does HTC manage to deliver here every time?

The turn-off: mediocre battery capabilities. To put a break on all audiophiles, we assume.

Expert Opinion

Little innovation and nothing to stir the market.

Display

For the price bracket it falls into, HTC Desire 830 has a screen that makes looking at the phone a delightful experience.

The Corning Gorilla glass protected screen measures 5.5 inches. The resolution of the phone makes it appear vibrant and well saturated. Light sensors control the brightness ably and the sunlight readability also doesn’t fail to impress. The sharpness and the hue of the colors is just right and doesn’t pinch the eyes.

Design

The design of the phone is modest; nothing too flashy.

Weighing 156 g, the phone isn’t too heavy but you can feel its bulk when you hold it. Phones in the upper echelons of HTC’s price range have a metallic body and if you are used to the metal encasing, then the plastic one on the Desire 830 might not feel that great in your hands. The colors used are in contrast and give a nice look to the phone. You can choose between white-orange and white-blue color combinations.

The front of the phone is occupied by a 5.5 inch screen with HTC’s amazing DOLBY boom sound speakers at the top and bottom. The upper half features a couple of sensors, the expected LED light for notifications, and the 4MP selfie camera. The bottom is only lined with the speakers and has no capacitative buttons.

The back is engraved with the company’s name and comes with a rear camera, a sensor, and flashlight.

The edges of the phone contrast with the front and back. At the top, we have a 3.5mm jack and at the bottom is a microUSB port. The power button and the volume buttons are conventionally placed on the right-hand side whereas the left features nothing.

Performance

With 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM, HTC Desire 830 packs in a powerful memory package. If you are fond of playing games or watching movies, these numbers will please you greatly. The PowerVR G6200 GPU will enhance to your gaming experience every time. If you still aren’t satisfied, you can easily switch the memory up to 256GB with a memory card. Performance lags were close to none.

The 64-bit processor tops off the storage capabilities by allowing high graphics to run with no heating.

Camera

The official page of HTC Desire 830 on the company’s website toots the horn of the phone’s cameras.

The rear one is a 13MP affair with an aperture of f2.0 and accessible flashlight. It has autofocus ability and other features like geo-tagging, touch focus, panorama, HDR and face detection. The volume keys can be used for taking photos and videos. The colors are rightly balanced and clicking pictures is a delight.

The front camera has a 4MP ultra-pixel lens which lets you take clear and vibrant selfies. Videos can be shot in full 1080p quality. For those who can’t live without editing their photos, facial beauty can be enhanced by applying skin touch-ups with live makeup.

What will seem new is the ability to take several selfies and combine them as a single picture using the photo booth. Voice selfies are also possible using voice control but the same has to be enabled in settings first.

Battery

The non-removable 2800 mAh Li-ion battery which is packed inside the back cover of the phone sounds satisfying according to the price of the phone.

However, the Marshmallow OS can drain the battery too quick. Coupled with this, if you are fond of spending long hours on the phone skipping between social media, playing games, and watching a couple of YouTube videos, you’ll see the tank emptying more quickly. Be sure to carry your adapter along with you. A bummer, yes and the only major pain point with this otherwise satisfying smartphone.

Battery TypeLi-Ion

Verdict

HTC Desire 830 is perfect for those who want a decent looking phone without spending too much cash and (most importantly) do not use their phone much. If your phone usage ranges from the mid to high level, then the battery will be a disappointment. In this case, we suggest you go for another phone. Otherwise, the phone has satisfactory performance in every other department- be it camera, gaming, or memory.
