Description

VIVO launched the Vivo Z3 in October 2018. It features a 6.3-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it packs an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor.

The phone comes in two storage variants – 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage capacity, and 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage capacity, expandable up to 256GB via microSD card. It is powered by a 3315mAh non-removable battery and runs on VIVO’s custom Funtouch OS based on Android v8.1 (Oreo).

The Vivo Z3 sports a dual camera setting on the rear, with a 16MP primary camera (f/2.0 aperture) and a 2MP secondary camera (f/2.4 aperture). You also get a 12MP selfie camera (f/2.0 aperture) at the front. Other sensors on the phone are Fingerprint Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, Gyroscope,  and Accelerometer. It also supports Face Unlock.

There are three colour variants for the Vivo Z3 – Starry Night Black, Aurora Blue, and Dream Powder. In India, the phone costs around Rs. 16,990.

Highlights

Pros:

  • It features a drop-notch display with minimalist bezels for an expansive viewing experience.
  • It has a dual-camera module on the back.
  • It has both a fingerprint sensor and face unlock feature for biometric security.
  • The processor delivers lag-free performance for the most part.
  • It has fast-charging support.
  • It has a dedicated microSD card slot.

Cons:

  • The battery capacity is insufficient for a phone of this size.
  • The camera performance suffers in low-light settings.
  • The face unlock feature performs decently only in favourable lighting conditions.
  • It does not have USB Type-C port.

The Vivo Z3 flaunts a classy and elegant design. It includes almost all the essential features of a good performer – a big display, a mid-range SoC, a decent set of cameras. If only the battery capacity were higher, the phone would make for a great daily driver.

Expert Opinion

Display

The Vivo Z3 flaunts a big 6.3-inch IPS LCD screen with over 90% screen-to-body ratio. As we mentioned before, there’s a tiny notch at the top. You also get the option to hide the notch while playing video games or watching movies. The Full HD+ resolution with a pixel density of 400 PPI ensures that you enjoy a pleasant viewing experience.

The display offers great colour reproduction – while the colours look bright and crisp, they are never oversaturated to hurt your eyes. Also, the viewing angles are good. The sunlight legibility of the phone functions pretty well on most days. However, extremely sunny days, you may find it difficult to view the display content outdoors.

Design

The phone keeps up with the contemporary trend; that is, it features a big display with a drop-notch. Except for the tiny notch and a small chin, the front screen is bezel-less. The notch houses the selfie camera and the earpiece rests on the top frame.

On the right side of the metal casing, you can find the volume rockers and the power button. The dual-SIM tray, along with a dedicated microSD card slot lies on the left side of the casing. It is actually a three-in-one card slot for two nano-SIMs and one memory card. This setting is very rare and is highly commendable since you don’t have to choose between a secondary SIM or a microSD card. At the bottom, there’s a speaker, a micro USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a mic.

We’ve seen the gradient design in many VIVO phones, and the Vivo Z3 rocks it too. The rear panel features a beautiful gradient design with 3D curved glass. The curved glass-back and the rounded corners allow for a comfortable grip. You can see the dual camera module aligned vertically at the top-left corner of the back panel. An LED flash lies just below the camera module. The fingerprint sensor lies at the top-middle portion of the rear panel.

Performance

The Vivo Z3 incorporates an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC (2GHz, dual-core, Kryo 360 + 1.7GHz, hexa-core, Kryo 360) coupled with an Adreno 615 GPU for enhanced graphical performance. The 4GB/6GB RAM ensures that the phone can deliver a smooth and seamless performance at all times. And it proves to be true. Not only can you perform routine tasks with utmost ease, but you can also enjoy multitasking without experiencing any hiccup whatsoever.

As far as gaming is concerned, the phone performs surprisingly well, thanks to Adreno 615 GPU and VIVO’s Dual-Turbo acceleration engine. The Dual-Turbo engine is made up of VIVO’s System-Turbo and Game-Turbo engines that help accentuate and enhance the overall gaming performance. Even while playing graphics-intensive games like PUBG and Asphalt, you will not notice any frame rate drops or sluggishness. So, playing high-end games on the Vivo Z3 would be a pleasant experience for gamers

Camera

The Vivo Z3 packs a 16MP + 2MP AI smart dual-camera module. The rear camera offers numerous useful features and modes like AR shoot, AI portrait composition, AI scene recognition, Face Beauty, Slow Motion, Time Lapse, Panorama, Portrait Mode, Professional Mode, and much more. In daylight settings, the rear cam can capture detailed and focused shots. The colours look accurate and vivid. The AI-feature enhances the image quality to give a smoother and refined appearance. But sometimes it may go overboard with the effect, resulting in artificial looking photos. However, in low-light settings, camera performance suffers. Photos captured in dimly-lit surroundings lack detail and depict a lot of noise. As a result, they look grainy.

As for the 12MP front camera, it can capture pretty decent selfies that are enough to suffice for your social media needs. Just like the rear cam, the front camera can take good shots only in favourable light settings. In low-light conditions, the selfies look washed out and blurry.

Battery

The phone has a 3315mAh battery along with a 22.5W fast charger. The battery capacity seems to be insufficient for a phone of this size. The phone can last almost an entire day if you use it only for performing daily tasks like calling, texting, browsing, etc. For prolonged gaming and binge-watching sessions, the battery level will drop way faster than usual. But thanks to the fast charging feature, it won’t take too long for the phone to get amped up again.

Vivo Z3 comes with all the necessary connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11, b/g/n, Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth v5.0, micro USB port, dual-SIM, FM Radio, GPS with Glonass, and 2G/3G/4G support.

Verdict

Overall, the VIVO Z3 appears to be a decent smartphone with many great features like a 6.3-inch touchscreen, a robust processor, Dual-Turbo acceleration engine, 22.5W dual-engine fast charge technology, dual camera, to name a few. However, it is not devoid of drawbacks either, particularly the cameras and the battery. If you are a VIVO fan, you can go for this phone, or else you can also check out other alternatives in the same price bracket – Samsung Galaxy A5, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Realme 3 Pro, and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2.
