Open Society Foundations claims that Soros was born in Hungary in 1930 and experienced the German occupation there between 1944 and 1945.
The Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros, whose estimated net worth is
$8.5 billion, awards funding to organisations and people who support democracy, openness, and freedom of speech.
In order to pay for his studies at the London School of Economics, Soros moved from Hungary to London in 1947, working part-time as a nightclub server and a railway porter.
After notably betting against the British pound in 1992, Soros rose to fame. In what became known as "Black Wednesday," he made
$1 billion from his huge short positions as the currency plummeted.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the 92-year-old Soros is the 253rd richest person in the world with a net worth of $8.5 billion. He became an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage initiatives in the early 2000s.
