Qualcomm has announced a new chipset, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which will power upcoming flagship killer phones. The chipset will cater to mid-range phones looking to offer flagship-level performance. It sits between the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, offering most features without the high price. Here is everything you need to know about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

Qualcomm’s latest chipset is based on TSMC’s 4nm architecture, the same as the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It features a 1+4+3 configuration with 1 Cortex X4 prime core clocked at 3GHz, 4 Cortex-A720 performance cores at 2.8GHz, and 3 Cortex A520 efficiency cores at 2GHz.

For graphics, you get the Adreno 735 GPU with the Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0, which can add generative frames to boost the frame rate. You also get Snapdragon Game Super Resolution for upscaling and hardware-accelerated ray tracing support.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Gaming Features

Furthermore, you get support for up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM at 4,200MHz and UFS 4.0 storage. For connectivity, you get USB 3.1 Gen 2 support and the Snapdragon X70 5G modem, similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

However, you get 3GPP Release and 5G power savings, resulting in better efficiency than the 8 Gen 2. There is also Wi-Fi 7 support apart from Bluetooth 5.4, 5G mmWave and sub-6 network support.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 also supports AI LLM (large language models) like Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano, and Zhipu ChatGLM. This is a significant factor as phones like the Google Pixel 8 do not support Gemini Nano.

Furthermore, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 can run on-device generative AI and comes with support models with up to 10 billion parameters. This is something that is missing on the 8 Gen 2.

Moreover, the 8s Gen 3 boasts a triple 18-bit ISP and the Hexagon NPU. It also supports an always-sensing camera that stays ready to detect your face for faster unlock, apart from QR code scanning support.

The processor can power three 36-megapixel cameras at 30FPS with zero shutter lag or a single 108-megapixel camera at 30FPS. It also supports 4K HDR recording at 60FPS and 1080p at 240FPS.

You can capture 200-megapixel photos with 10-bit and HEVC support, although there is no support for 8K or 4K at 120FPS.In addition, you get H.265 and AV1 decoding with HDR playback, including HDR 10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 can power a Quad HD+ display at up to 144Hz or 4K at 60Hz. It also supports variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 240Hz and external displays 8K at 30Hz or 1080p at up to 240Hz.

Availability And Partner Brands

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will debut to power phones from brands like Honor, iQOO, Realme, Redmi and Xiaomi in the upcoming months. Furthermore, the first Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 could arrive as early as March, likely the end of this month.

The upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Turbo, which will debut globally as the Poco F6, could use the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The iQOO Z9 Turbo is also speculated to use the latest chipset.
