Nokia Mobile Phones
Nokia is a multinational communications, information technology and consumer electronics company which was founded in 1865. Nokia is headquartered in Espoo, Finland. The company has a deep history and has worked in different sectors in the past 150 years. However, since the 1990s the company has only focused on telecommunications infrastructure , technology development and licensing. Nokia is one of the major patent licensors for large mobile phone vendors. In 2018, Nokia was ranked third in the world for network equipment manufacturing. Nokia’s operating profit was negative in 1991 after which it went to $1 billion in 1995. It later also reached the $4 billion mark in 1999.
In November 1992, Nokia 1011 was introduced. It was the first GSM mobile phone which was commercially available. Nokia mobile phones overtook Motorola to become the top mobile selling brand in 1998. In the same year in December, Nokia manufactured its 100 millionth Nokia mobile phone. Nokia was able to overtake Motorola and Ericsson only because it catered the youth and the fashion-oriented consumers well. Nokia 5110 and 3210 were two of Nokia’s major offerings that offered the consumers with fashionable and replaceable back covers in different colours which was called Xpress-on.
Nokia smartphones were especially recognized for developing camera mobile phones. In 2003, Nokia 3600/3650 was launched as the first camera mobile phone in North America. In 2005, Nokia introduced its N series which was the onset of its flagship range of mobile phones for the next six years. The Nokia N95 was launched in 2006 and it brought huge success for Nokia mobile phones. The Nokia N82 with a xenon flash was the successor of N95 and was awarded the “Best Mobile Imaging” device in Europe in 2008. The Nokia N8 was launched in 2010 and it came with a 12 megapixel camera.
The Nokia 808 PureView was introduced in 2012 and it had a whopping 41-megapixel camera. In 2012 itself, The Nokia Lumia 920 was launched which had PureView technologies. Nokia was one of the trailblazers for mobile phones. Most of the Nokia mobile phones had Snake, the popular mobile game pre-installed. In February 2011, Nokia collaborated with Microsoft and announced that Windows Phone 7 would be the primary operating system for Nokia mobile phones. Bing was introduced as the official search engine for Nokia phones. Later in November 2011, Nokia’s flagship phone Lumia 800 was launched. However, all these smartphones brought consecutive losses for the company and these were huge losses.
Nokia Lumia 920 was introduced in September 2012. It was said to be one of the good smartphones at that time which could challenge the rivals because of its good specifications set. In 2014, Interbrand announced that the global brand value of Nokia had fallen to the 98th position which was 5th position in 2009. Nokia announced a $14.1 million partnership with NASA to build a 4G network for astronauts. The project is set to launch in 2022. In 2020, Nokia collaborated with Flipkart to market Nokia smartphones and other Nokia products in India.
Nokia’s latest mobile phone Nokia XR20 was launched in India in October 2021. Nokia XR20 price in India starts from Rs. 46,039. Nokia also launched the budget range smartphone Nokia G10 in September 2021. The phone’s prices in India start from Rs. 11,890. Both these mobile phones fall in different price ranges. This is the reason why smartphone buyers have a variety of alternatives to choose from. Nokia has had a history of many years in producing Nokia mobile phones and they have a lot of variety in their smartphone portfolio.
