For now, Samsung’s Galaxy M-series has three devices: M10, M20 and M30. While the Galaxy M10 falls in the sub-10k bracket and is a great budget phone, the Galaxy M20 falls in the 10-13k bracket. Now, what’s left to see is what changes has Samsung made in the Galaxy M20 and if indeed, it is value for money.  

The Samsung Galaxy M20 is available in two configurations: one with 64GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM, and another with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM. Unfortunately, all variants of this phone are no longer available because Samsung has introduced newer phones in the M20 series, such as the M21.

The phone is unfortuntely no longer available on Amazon, Flipkart, or any other major retailer.

The Galaxy M20 is loaded with incredible specs. First, there is the high-resolution 6.3-inch TFT LCD screen that ensures you have an enjoyable and pleasant viewing experience. Second, it runs on Samsung’s latest processor – the Exynos 7904.

It features an octa-core Exynos 7904 processor clocked at 1.8GHz. Third, it comes with a massive battery backup – a 5000 mAh battery with a USB Type-C port for fast charging.

The Galaxy M20 runs on Android 8.1 (Oreo) OS with Samsung’s Experience 9.5 UI skin on top. It features a dual-camera setup in the rear – 13MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. For selfies, you get an 8MP camera on the front.

As for the memory configuration, you get two options – 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage that is priced at Rs. 10,990, and 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage costing Rs. 12,990. The memory can be expanded up to 512GB via a microSD card.

There are two colour variants for the phone – Ocean Blue and Charcoal Black (same as Galaxy M10).

If you compare the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M10, you’ll notice that they have identical looks, except that M20 is taller with a slimmer chin. The phone has a great design with rounded edges. So, it is comfortable to hold and use. The plastic back is glossy, and hence, smudges and fingerprints are bound to latch on.

On the right side of the frame, you will find the volume and power buttons. The dual-SIM tray and a dedicated microSD card slot lie on the left.

The bottom portion holds the 3.5mm audio jack, the USB Type-C port, and the speaker grille. At the back, you can see the dual-camera module aligned vertically on the top left corner; the LED flash lies just below this. There is also a pill-shaped Fingerprint Sensor placed conveniently on the top middle portion of the rear panel.

The display is one of the biggest selling points of the Galaxy M20. Samsung Galaxy M20 sports a 6.3-inch Full HD+Infinity-V display with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It has a pixel density of 409 PPI and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The screen offers good viewing angles and accurate color reproduction.

Plus, the sunlight legibility is great. While the display is practically bezel-less, there is a prominent chin. The V-shaped notch at the top houses the selfie camera.

The Galaxy M20 uses Samsung’s Exynos 7904 processor is designed on a 14-nanometer (nm) process. While it has two Cortex A73 cores clocked at 1.8GHz for performance-intensive tasks, the other six cores are Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz for enhancing the efficiency.

In AnTuTu, it scored 107,540 which is somewhat near to that of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 or Snapdragon 636, and in Geekbench test, it scored 1,315 for single-core performance and 4,094 for multi-core performance.

As far as the performance goes, the phone can handle multitasking with ease. Also, it can perform day-to-day tasks very well without any hiccups or lags. Even with light gaming, you won’t experience any lags.

The problem only starts when you try to play graphics-intensive games like PUBG and Asphalt 9: Legends. But then, that’s only an issue for gamers and not for those who are looking for a reliable everyday phone.

The Galaxy M20 features a dual-camera module on the rear. It combines a 13MP primary camera (with f/1.9 aperture) with a 5MP secondary shooter with a 120-degree ultra-wide angle lens. While the camera has a very responsive focus and performs really well in bright light conditions, in low light settings, it delivers average results.

You get various setting options like Exposure compensation, ISO control, Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Autofocus, Touch to focus, Face detection, and Continuous Shooting, to name a few. There’s also useful camera modes like Live Focus, HDR imaging, and Beautification modes. The daylight shots look vibrant with good color representation and details.

However, you might notice fish-eye distortion when using the secondary shooter with a wide-angle lens. The wide-angle camera must be reserved only for settings with ample light.

As for the 8MP selfie camera, it delivers decent and well-balanced results in well-lit settings. The camera captures the facial details quite well, and you always have the Beauty mode to enhance specific features like skin tone, color, etc. In low-light conditions, the camera performance suffers.

But considering the price of the Galaxy M20, it must be acknowledged that the camera performance is at par with other models in the same price bracket, and maybe even better than a few (the Zenfone Max Pro M2 and Realme U1, for example).

The battery life is again one of the greatest aspects of the Galaxy M20. It comes with a massive, non-removable 5000 mAh battery that promises outstanding backup throughout the day. If you use the phone for typical day-to-day tasks such as calling, texting, etc., the battery can stretch for over a day.

However, if you’re into extensive browsing or gaming, you might have to charge your phone at the end of the day. Overall, the battery performance is excellent.

After considering all things that Samsung Galaxy M20 brings to the table, we must say that it is a good budget phone that will not disappoint you. The phone has a great display, excellent battery life, and decent camera setup. The gaming issue aside, this phone will be a perfect match for those who put battery life above everything else.
