OPPO A9 sports a 6.53-inch display with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) OS and is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 processor. For enhanced graphical performance, it gets a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. As far as storage is concerned, the device has 6 GB RAM and 128GB internal memory, expandable up to 256GB through a microSD card. It has a 4020mAh battery capacity.

The phone features a dual-camera setting – 16MP + 2MP shooters along with an LED flash. On the rear, there’s also a fingerprint sensor located just below the camera module. Other sensors on the phone include Ambient Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, and Accelerometer. While it is quite slim (8.3 mm), it is slightly on the heavier side – it weighs 190g.

The Oppo A9 features a slim and sleek body with a gradient back design. The back panel has a gradient colour effect that reflects light in interesting patterns at certain angles. The corners are rounded for a comfortable grip. On the back, there’s a dual camera module with an LED flash located just below it. The Fingerprint Sensor is placed conveniently below the camera module.

The front display has a tiny dot-notch that houses the selfie camera. Apart from the small chin at the bottom, the phone is practically bezel-less. While the power button is on the right side, the left side houses the volume rockers and the dual-SIM tray. The micro USB port, 3.5mm jack, and speaker grille lie at the bottom.

The phone comes with a 6.53-inch full-HD+ display with a screen resolution of 1080×2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. It gets a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection to prevent against accidental damages.

The thin bezels and dot-notch offer an immersive viewing experience. The display has good colour reproduction and also decent viewing angles. Watching videos, browsing content, and playing games is a pleasant experience altogether. However, the display isn’t optimized for 4K and other high-resolution content.

The Oppo A9 has an octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 (2.1 GHz, Quad core, Cortex A73 + 2 GHz, Quad core, Cortex A53). It is paired with a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU to enhance the graphical performance. Not just that, the Helio P70 SoC is also armed with an Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit (APU) that boosts performance for multitasking and gaming, besides also enabling efficient power consumption.

The phone can handle everyday tasks very well without showing any signs of lagging. Navigating between the apps and multitasking is a breeze. Even while gaming, you will not face any real hiccups with lightweight games like Candy Crush, Temple Run, etc. For graphics-intensive games like PUBG and Asphalt, you can switch to medium settings to avoid the occasional frame rate drops and lags. Overall, the phone is a decent performer.

The phone sports a dual-camera module – a 16MP primary camera (f/1.8 aperture) paired with a 2MP secondary shooter. The camera comes with a ton of options for Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection, Touch to Focus, Time-lapse Imaging, Panorama Mode, Pro Mode, and much more.

As for daylight shots, the camera delivers some good results; but the performance can be inconsistent at times. Images captured with steady hands look bright, with accurate colours, and a fair share of details. On the contrary, in low-light conditions, the captured images look grainy with a lot of noise. Usually, the photos captured in low-light conditions lack details. Coming to the 16MP front camera, while the selfies come out looking good in daylight conditions, they look washed out and grainy in dimly-lit environments. Given the price range, Oppo could have done much better when it comes to the cameras.

The Oppo A9 has a massive 4020mAh battery that can stretch through an entire day, provided you use it for routine tasks like calling, texting, video browsing, etc. However, if you engage in prolonged gaming or video streaming, the battery percentage will drop faster than usual (but that’s true of all phones). Sadly, it does not come with fast charging support.

Connectivity options in the phone include Wi-Fi 802.11, b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth v4.2, micro USB port, dual-SIM, FM Radio, GPS with A-GPS and Glonass, and 2G/3G/4G support.

Oppo A9 seems like a reliable daily driver with a big and vibrant display and massive battery power. Apart from these two features, the phone doesn’t seem to offer much given the price. Under 19k, there are much better options in the market such as Realme X, Huawei Y9, Redmi Y3, Huawei Honor 8A, to name a few.
