One of the fastest-growing budget phone companies in the Indian Market, Oppo is back with another of its sets from their flagship F-series. This time, they arrive with a good-looking and market-defining Oppo F5 – coming at a price of Rs. 13,799. Oppo F5 has everything desired from a mid-range phone. It has great performance, a stellar set of cameras and it looks good. For the selfie crowd, Oppo does not disappoint by delivering a top-end selfie camera that shoots killer selfies to share on social media.

The Oppo F5 comes in two variants: one with 64GB of internal storage and 6GB of RAM, and another with 32GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The phone is no longer available on Amazon or Flipkart, however, the 32/4 GB RAM model is available on Croma for Rs 12,994.

Oppo F5 does lag pretty behind its competitors, especially in 2020, when there are so many other offerings with a much better configuration at a much lower price tag.

Oppo F5 is a thin phone at 7.5mm and has a manageable weight of 152g. The rear panel has a texture to help you grip the phone easily. It can be easily handled with one hand, and the curved ends make it feel good in hand. The rear shell has a metallic texture that shines and can change colour based on the angle of light. The fingerprint sensor is settled at the back and easy to reach, due to its oblong shape. A disappointment is that there is a Micro-USB port instead of the upgraded and modern Type-C standard –  which was an expectation from Oppo.

Oppo F5 has an impressive sizeable full-HD screen of 6-inches with a resolution of 1080×2160 pixels and an 18:9 aspect. The display itself is crisp and sharp. You get to see a lot of punchy colours. The viewing angles do not disappoint. Movies can make you immerse in the screen. The only issue is with the screen protector that tends to take up fingerprint smudges easily.

It is packed with by the MediaTek MT6763T processor which features eight ARM Cortex A53 cores. Out of the eight, four run at 2.3GHz for intensive tasks and the other four run at 1.65GHz. For graphics processing, it has an integrated Mali-G71 MP2 GPU which helps to bring about an improved image processing. Benchmark performance found it getting 64,303 points, which is stronger than its prime competitors Honor 9i’s 58,068 and Vivo V7 Plus’ 57,791. It does not have any noticeable lag during app switching and does not experience slowdowns when two or three apps are running in the background. Moderate games can run smoothly with good graphics, giving a genuine immersive experience but heavy games consuming a lot of graphics may struggle a bit. The fingerprint reader is snappy, but facial recognition is 1-2 seconds slower and does not work well in low light.

Oppo F5 has a rear 16MP camera which works well and captures satisfactory images in daytime as well as low-light situations at night. The colours are bright, and details come out well, though the autofocus is not always accurate. The textures are kept realistic, and it does not lose much quality when it is seen in full screen.

In low light situations or in indoors under artificial lighting, quite a lot of details are preserved in the image. When the light is extremely low, you can observe a bit of grain, and visual noise and the objects might have poor edges, but they are still usable. Videos are quite sharp, and even under different lighting conditions, they retain their smoothness.

The grand attraction of Oppo, of course, is the selfie camera – it holds up to the selfie expert tag. The 20MP front camera can produce quality selfies, popping out the details of the face though the objects in the background may not be reproduced as well. However, the selfies are amazing and can be used in social media easily. However, the lack of a flash is a surprising decision, though in this case, the screen light helps a little bit.

It has an impressive 3200mAh battery which can give a day and a half worth of juice on a single charge. The battery remains alive even after some intense functions like taking photos, playing games for a bit and streaming videos. An HD video loop test saw it running for about 11 hours and 24 minutes which is excellent for the large display. However, it does not have fast charging which most phones are making a standard to their handset. It takes an hour to go up from 10 percent to 65 percent, which is okay without fast charging but still slow.

Oppo F5 is a winner excelling on many levels – great design, sturdy, and an immersive screen. Inside, it has a strong processor and a juicy battery to pair it with. It’s almost perfect at the price range, except for the gimmicky facial recognition. Otherwise, it’s a great mid-range phone to purchase if you want a stylish powerpack and it gives a good fight to its other competitors which are worth considering like  Honor 9i and Vivo V7 Plus.
