Vivo Z1 is Vivo’s attempt to lower its price and yet provide decent hardware with its phone. Priced at Rs. 18,990, the phone pushes on in the mid-range market with its capable hardware.

Vivo Z1 does not falter in many places. It comes with a decent performance, paired with a capable battery. For an immersive experience, it provides a large screen too. One of its major weaknesses is the lack of Gorilla Glass. If you can buy a screen cover and be a little bit careful with this handset, then you will have a value-for-money product in your hands.

If you have been following Vivo phones, then the Vivo Z1 will not surprise you with its looks. It has a few pros and cons:

  • The phone is lightweight and quite sturdy, with ergonomically-placed buttons.
  • The Vivo Z1 has a 1080p big screen with incredible pixel density, resulting in a vibrant colour presentation.
  • The Vivo Z1 has a capable mid-range processor which can multitask average apps without stuttering.
  • The phone has a passable camera for a low mid-range phone and clicks decent daylight shots.

  • Despite have a big screen, the phone does not have the essential Gorilla Glass protection to prevent it from scratches.
  • The battery is decent, but due to the increased display, it does not seem inadequate.
  • It does not have fast charging.
  • The low-light performance of the cameras could have been better.
  • The Vivo Z1 comes at a lower price than Vivo’s general mid-range handsets. Hence, it can be a value-for-money phone for anyone looking for a mid-range, decent product.

Expert Opinion

Vivo Z1 is Vivo’s mid-range offering that keeps everything fit and running under the hood to offer significant value for the money.

The Vivo Z1 arrives with a 6.25 IPS LCD screen with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The resolution is about 1080 x 2280 pixels. The phone has a pixel density of about 404ppi, which is quite good. Due to the modern aspect ratio, the phone looks tall and provides an amazing immersive experience at a mid-range price. The colours of the phone are quite vibrant and punchy. Brightness is quite right when used indoors but might falter outdoors under harsh sunlight. Viewing angles are pretty decent with negligible distortion of colour. However, the major drawback is that despite having such a big screen, the phone does not offer Gorilla Glass protection, making it a very risky phone to handle.

Vivo Z1 has a metal body which does not look much different from other Vivo models. It does have a gradient-like back, which gives it a bit of a premium touch. It is comfortable to hold and adequately fits in your hand. The front of the phone is delightful since it is mostly bezel-free and only has a little notch. You get enough space to work with it. It is quite lightweight too, at 149.30g. The phone has an easy to reach volume rocker and power button on the right-hand side. The fingerprint scanner is at the back just about the VIVO branding. The phone arrives with a dual-camera module placed at the top corner of the phone. Design-wise, the phone will not attract much attention.

The phone arrives with a trusty Snapdragon 660 chipset. The Snapdragon 660 chipset is one of the best chipsets that is still used in mid-range handsets. It is efficient and can run multiple apps without any lag. Plus, the phone is paired with 4GB RAM, which is managed well and can handle app switching with ease. The phone can run casual games smoothly without a problem. However, it might falter, especially with high-end games like PUBG or Asphalt 9 and it is recommended to play those games in low settings.

The Vivo Z1 has a dual camera with the primary 13MP camera and a secondary, 2MP depth-sensing rear camera. In daylight, the camera clicks decent shots, but there is a bit of grain captured. When you zoom in, the photos turn out to be grainy. The exposure is quite dynamic, though. In portrait mode, the camera functions better though it does have a problem with edge detection. At night, the quality of the camera shots drops further. Lots of grain is captured, leading to the subjects being marginally discernible.

In the front, the phone holds a 24MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The selfie camera clicks decent photos suitable for social media uploads.

It can record Quad HD video recording at 2160p at about 30fps and 1080p at about 30fps. The videos come out sharp without significant loss of colours.

The Vivo Z1 has an average 3260 mAh battery. The battery is capable enough to keep the phone chugging for about a whole day with light use, but it seems inadequate, especially considering the 1080p display that the phone arrives in. It would have been better to fit a 4000 mAh battery. In general, with heavy use, the battery drains up fast. Plus, the phone has not fast charging tech so you might have to wait for about 2 hours to see it get to 100%.

The Vivo Z1 is a capable phone and looks good too. As a mid-range model, the phone ticks most of the aspects required from a mid-range marvel. It has a good processor, paired with a high battery. Plus, the camera shots turn out to be quite decent. The lack of fast charging is also a weakness for this phone. If you are a Vivo fan, then this mid-range model is a great buy since it comes with excellent specifications at a lower price, considering Vivo’s standards. However, there are better models present in the market.
