Micromax Mobile Phones
Micromax is an Indian smartphone company that was incorporated in March 2000. The company is headquartered at Gurgaon in India. The company’s product line-up is long which includes smartphones, tablets, LED TV’s, air conditioners, laptops, power banks and much more. However, if we focus on the smartphone manufacturing part, Micromax was the tenth largest smartphone seller in the world in 2014. In the coming years, Micromax faced tough competition from emerging Chinese smartphone brands in India. However, it was only in 2008 that Micromax began selling smartphones. The company has launched both budget and flagship handsets with unique features.
Micromax Xi 1 smartphone was the first phone by the company with a month-long battery backup. 2014 was the year when Micromax mobile phones were sold more than Samsung phones in India. In the same year in January, Micromax was the first Indian smartphone brand to sell phones in Russia. However, with a lot of competition around, Micromax lost its roots in India. Micromax mobile phones had to make a comeback in India in 2020 with its IN series. One of Micromax’s latest smartphones includes Micromax IN 1. The phone has a triple camera setup, 6.67 inches display, MediaTek Helio processor and a whopping 5,000mAh battery.
Micromax IN 1 price in India starts from Rs. 9,999. It is a touch screen device. Another big launch by Micromax in 2021 is the Micromax IN 2B. The phone comes with a Unisoc T610 processor, 6.52 inches display, dual camera and a 5,000mAh battery. Micromax IN 2B price in India starts from Rs. 8,499. These have been considered as the comeback smartphones for Micromax in the Indian smartphone market. Other than these, Micromax has been releasing keypad based mobile phones in India. Micromax X416 was launched in India in September 2021. The price of the phone starts from as low as Rs. 1,199.
The rising competition for Micromax in the Indian smartphone market was a major reason why Micromax was pulled down. Micromax had been away from the headlines for a very long time. Even though it was lost, it managed to be in the top 5 smartphone makers in the Indian smartphone market in the first quarter of 2020. It acquired 7% of market share in the first quarter of 2020. This was way higher than that of the 2% market share in the first half of 2019.
Reliance Jio 4G can be considered as one of the major reasons for Micromax’s downfall. Micromax went wrong when it did not enter the 4G market at the time it should have. It had around 40 Micromax mobile phone options in 2G and 3G sector. However, there were no signs of a 4G Micromax mobile phone. Reliance Jio 4G revolutionized the Internet in India. Earlier it was accessible only to limited users who could afford the premium prices of the Internet. Reliance Jio 4G provided free calls and internet for the entire population. This turned the tables for Micromax and it witnessed a major downfall.
However, with the launch of the Micromax IN series, Micromax has managed to re-enter the Indian smartphone market. The new Micromax mobile phones have been accepted widely. The acceptance for these Micromax mobile phones is a sign of hope for Micromax’s survival in India. We hope that Micromax would maintain and in fact, raise the bar with any new launches in the market. Until then, the Micromax IN series is something to look out for. Micromax has made a powerful comeback with its IN series of Micromax mobile phones. Micromax might reclaim the markets in the future that are now dominated by Chinese smartphone manufacturers in India.
