  • Google launched Android 16 earlier than expected, rolling it out in early June, well ahead of its typical schedule. Despite the early release, many smartphone brands are still playing catch-up, and Nothing is no exception. Fortunately, Nothing has shared its roadmap for the upcoming Nothing OS 4.0 update. We now have a clear timeline, a list of eligible devices, and a preview of the features set to arrive with the Nothing OS 5. So, here’s a complete rundown of what to expect from this new software update.

The brand has officially stated that the original Nothing Phone (1) will not receive the Android 16 update. However, all other Nothing devices are eligible for the upgrade.

Nothing guarantees three major Android updates for its smartphones, with its first flagship, the Nothing Phone (3), offering up to five updates.

Features And Release Date Of This Update

All the above mentioned Nothing OS 4 eligible devices will receive the following new features:

    • Progress-centric notifications: Expect real-time updates from ride-share and food delivery apps directly on the lock screen and notification panel, similar to iPhone’s Live Activities, Samsung’s Now Bar, and Oppo’s Live Alerts.
    • Less cluttered notifications: Android 16 will group alerts from the same app and reduce volume for rapid notifications. This feature is expected in Nothing OS 4.0.
    • Android Protection: New security features to guard against online attacks, harmful apps, scam calls, and unsafe websites.
    • Interactive widgets & mini-games: More playful and functional widgets and glanceable notifications for the Glyph Matrix (on Nothing Phone 3). Unclear if older devices will get updates to the Glyph Interface.

Nothing will release the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.0 later this autumn, likely between September and November. The update will first roll out to the Nothing Phone (3), followed by other models. Before the stable release in Q3, beta versions of Nothing OS 4.0 are expected to be released to address any critical bugs.
