Xiaomi Takes Samsung’s Place to Become the No. 1 Smartphone Brand Globally

For the first time, Xiaomi takes over Samsung’s first place to become the number one smartphone brand in the world. The latest data from Counterpoint Research states that the brand’s sales grew 26 per cent (month-on-month) in June. Hence, this making it the fastest-growing brand for the month. Earlier this year, the brand also overtook Apple to become the second-largest smartphone brand in the world. Moreover, it also surpassed Samsung in Europe to take the lead in the region in Q2 2021.

Furthermore, Xiaomi was also the number two brand globally for Q2 2021 in terms of sales. According to Counterpoint Research’s Monthly Market Pulse Service, it has sold close to 800 million smartphones since its inception in 2011 totally. Samsung’s downfall from its number one position comes from its’ supply constraints due to the market situation in Vietnam. For those who don’t know, Vietnam is where Samsung manufactures and ships the bulk of its phones. Although, Counterpoint expects Samsung to bounce back once its supply issues get resolved. In turn, it may see Xiaomi fall back to second again.

Can Xiaomi maintain its place as first by beating Samsung?

“Ever since the decline of Huawei commenced, Xiaomi has been making consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline. The OEM has been expanding in Huawei’s and Honor’s legacy markets like China, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In June, Xiaomi tops because China, Europe and India’s recovery and Samsung’s decline due to supply constraints.”

Meanwhile, the momentum might help Samsung get back at its game. As the brand is prepping to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 3 on August 1. Moreover, it will launch new models in the Galaxy A series in the coming months. However, Xiaomi is not backing down either considering its’ own launches and new products – it is gaining ground.
