Each phone was scored across these parameters using a weighted scoring system to calculate its overall Refurbished Value Score.

Total = 100

The higher the score, the better the overall value it offers in today’s refurbished market. This helps us determine the Owership value and then the RVI (Refurbished Value Index).

Software Support Score

The Software Score measures how many years of official software updates a phone is expected to receive.

Software updates keep a smartphone secure, compatible, and up to date. They include new features, security patches, bug fixes, and support for the latest apps.

Hence, phones that will continue getting Android or iOS updates for a longer period receive a higher score, while phones nearing the end of their update cycle receive a lower score.

Formulae Used:

Software Score = ((Software Support Left − Minimum Support Left) ÷ (Maximum Support Left − Minimum Support Left)) × 100

The phone with the longest remaining software support receives a Software Score of 100. While the phone with no official software support left receives a score of 0. All other phones are scored proportionally based on their remaining years of support.

Performance Longetivity Score

With this one, I wanted to answer the most concerining question:

“If I buy this refurbished phone today, how long will it continue to feel fast?“

The Performance Longevity Score estimates how many more years a phone is expected to deliver a smooth and responsive experience.

Instead of rewarding the fastest processor or the highest benchmark score, this score focuses on real-world longevity. Like how well the phone can handle everyday tasks, multitasking, gaming, and demanding apps over the coming years.

This makes it more useful for refurbished phone buyers, who care about long-term usability rather than peak performance.

A higher score means the phone can handle more. That makes it a better long-term refurbished purchase.

Scoring bands

Following are the scores we assigned to each phone based on their chipset.

Age Score

The Age Score reflects how old a smartphone is compared to the other phones in its price category. Newer devices generally receive higher scores because they are more likely to offer better battery health, improved hardware longevity, and longer software support. Older phones receive lower scores as they are closer to the end of their usable lifespan.

Formula used:

Age Score = ((Maximum Phone Age − Phone Age) ÷ (Maximum Phone Age − Minimum Phone Age)) × 100

Where:

• Maximum Phone Age = Oldest phone in the comparison
• Minimum Phone Age = Newest phone in the comparison

The newest phone in the comparison receives an Age Score of 100, while the oldest phone receives a score of 0. This doesn’t mean the older phone is bad. It simply means it has been on the market for longer.

Repair Score

The Repair Score shows how affordable a phone is to repair if its display gets damaged. A higher score means the display repair costs less compared to the phone’s refurbished price.

Instead of looking at the repair cost alone, we compared it with the phone’s refurbished price. This is called the Repair Cost Ratio.

Formula Used:

Repair Cost Ratio = (Display Repair Cost ÷ Refurbished Price) × 100

For example, a Rs. 10,000 screen replacement on a Rs. 20,000 phone is much more expensive than a Rs. 10,000 screen replacement on a Rs. 1,20,000 phone.

Here, we only considered the display repair cost. It is because it’s usually the most expensive and one of the most common smartphone repairs.

Phones with a lower repair cost ratio receive a higher Repair Score because they’re more affordable to repair if something goes wrong.

Deciding On The Final RVI

The Refurbished Value Index (RVI) measures how much long-term ownership value a refurbished smartphone delivers for every rupee spent.

It is calculated by dividing the phone’s weighted Ownership Score by its refurbished price.

The Owership Score considers software support, repairability, performance longevity, and age.

Phones with a higher RVI offer better overall value for money and rank higher in the index.

Here are the steps followed to calculate RVI for each phone in our list.

Understanding The RVI Rankings

Why Are Some Rankings So Surprising?

At first glance, some of the rankings may seem surprising. For example, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, despite being one of the newest and most powerful smartphones available, ranks near the bottom of the Refurbished Value Index (RVI). On the other hand, older devices like the iPhone 11 and Vivo Y31 Pro 5G rank much higher.

This doesn’t mean these older phones are better smartphones. Instead, it highlights the difference between ownership quality and value for money.

Ownership Score vs Refurbished Value Index (RVI)

The Ownership Score measures a phone’s long-term usability by considering software support, performance longevity, age, and repairability. Unsurprisingly, newer flagship phones dominate this metric because they receive longer software support, offer superior performance, and are built on newer hardware.

However, the Refurbished Value Index (RVI) goes one step further by asking an important question:

How much long-term ownership quality do you get for every rupee you spend on a refurbished phone?

This is why the refurbished price becomes a crucial part of the calculation.

Why Do Premium Flagships Rank Lower?

A premium flagship like the iPhone 16 Pro Max has an excellent Ownership Score, but its refurbished price is still relatively high because it is a recent flagship with strong market demand. As a result, every additional point of ownership quality comes at a much higher cost. In other words, while it offers an outstanding ownership experience, the amount of quality you receive per rupee spent is lower than several older devices.

Conversely, phones such as the iPhone 11 or Samsung Galaxy S23 FE have experienced significant price depreciation while still offering respectable software support and everyday performance. Since their ownership quality has not declined as rapidly as their refurbished prices, they currently deliver a stronger value proposition.

This also explains why recently launched flagship phones generally rank lower in the RVI. Their refurbished prices remain relatively close to their original retail prices, meaning buyers pay a substantial premium for incremental improvements in hardware and features. Over time, as these devices depreciate further while continuing to receive software updates and deliver strong performance, their RVI is expected to improve.

How Should You Interpret the RVI?

The RVI should be interpreted as a value-for-money index, not a measure of which phone is objectively the best. But if your goal is to maximise long-term ownership quality for the amount you spend, the rankings in the Refurbished Value Index provide a more meaningful comparison.
