The leader of budget smartphones, Xiaomi has come out with Redmi 5A in an attempt to meet the growing expectations of the Indian population. It is a revision of Redmi 4A and comes at an unbelievable range starting from Rs. 6,419 for the 2GB RAM and 16GB storage capacity variant. A range that will immediately steal the heart of the masses, Xiaomi hits the delicate balance between affordability and great features perfectly.
However, even though it comes with a powerful processor, exceptional battery life, and moderate cameras, it cannot be called a significant upgrade of Redmi 4A. Xiaomi seems to keep playing it safe with their newer models making them a bit redundant which is not an excellent choice for Mi phones, especially considering the ever-improving flagship phone market of today.
The Redmi 5A is not going to impress you with its design. It comes with all the features of 4A, making you wonder whether you are holding a different phone or not. Released with the similar Snapdragon 425 processor and a battery of 3,000 mAh, it continues to carry a reliable performance coupled with a durable battery. The camera, too, has gone through some notable upgrades.
Equipped with the Snapdragon 425, the chipset is something you can rely on for essential functions. Don’t go for heavy gaming or rapid app switching, and the 425 will sail you through every feature offered by this phone without slowing down. However, with time, it stands to reason that performance will degrade.
Redmi comes with a mediocre camera, as expected at this price, but it has included a quick autofocus which works great in daylight. Low-light photography suffers a huge blow, but in the day, you can capture reasonably good images. Selfie camera comes with Beauty mode which is good but might go overboard with the beautification process. Turn it off, and you will end up with a weak 5MP selfie camera.
On the whole, Redmi 5A is not a significant upgrade over 4A. It’s a good phone for first-time Android user, but if you already have experience, there are better options available in the market, even under the Mi flagship models.
