Apple M2, the apparent successor to the company’s next-generation custom chipset is now in production. To recall, it has already refreshed a good chunk of its products with the M1 chip. Now, this successor is now on its way to launch, according to a report from Nikkei. Moreover, the mass production of the M2 silicon is happening, which could unveil as early as July 2021. In addition, this chipset is to debut alongside some new Macbooks later in the year.

Furthermore, we can expect it to launch around WWDC, which generally happens in June this year. Other reports talk about an M1 successor called the M1X. However, the existence of an Apple M2 confuses the masses even more. Although they can also be two different chipset.

A Bloomberg report from last year talks about Apple working on twelve-core and sixteen-core chips. The former is likely intended for consumer devices, wherea the latter could be earmarked for enterprise-grade applications. Moreover, this sits in line with earlier rumors which talked about some new MacBooks coming out later in the year.

Apple M2 chip will reportedly use TSMC’s enhanced 5nm node (N5P), an incremental upgrade over its predecessor. However, its’ exact core configuration is still a mystery. Although, Apple will very likely be sticking to the big.LITTLE architecture. Moreover, we can also expect a mix of four (or six) performance cores and four efficiency cores. However, anything more would effectively render the older M1 chip obsolete in less than a year. Furthermore, we can expect some GPU/NPU improvements, along with some IPC gains, too.
