  • Valve has announced that it is collaborating with additional partners to develop officially licensed SteamOS devices. This information was revealed in the updated SteamOS FAQ. While Lenovo was the sole confirmed partner in January, Valve now states it is working with several other chosen OEMs. However, the company has not disclosed the names of these new partners or announced any new devices so far.     SteamOS is a Linux-based gaming operating system featuring the Steam Client as its primary interface. It provides access to the Steam Library, Steam Chat, game recording, and various other functions. Optimized for controller navigation, SteamOS also supports fast suspend and resume capabilities, with system and driver updates occurring automatically.

    SteamOS release will enable access to over 18,000 games from the Steam catalog by leveraging Proton, a compatibility layer that lets Windows titles run seamlessly on Linux without requiring developers to make adjustments. Titles with compatibility issues will show up through the Steam Verified system.

    Users also have the option to switch to a traditional Linux desktop environment, allowing installation of other applications and game launchers. Built on Arch Linux, SteamOS features an open-source core, while the Steam Client and certain drivers remain proprietary.

    How And When To Get It?

    SteamOS is anticipated to release and be pre-installed on compatible devices, currently limited to the Steam Deck and Legion Go S. Valve is actively working to broaden support and enhance compatibility with AMD-based handheld PCs. You can test the SteamOS using the recovery image available for download on Valve’s website.
