Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced Voice Chat, a feature that allows group members to engage in live audio conversations while still messaging within the same group chat. WhatsApp Voice Chat For All Groups: What Does It Mean?
With the latest update, WhatsApp’s Voice Chat is now accessible in groups of all sizes, expanding from the previous 33-member cap to support up to 256 members. Any group member can initiate a voice chat, which starts quietly without sending notifications, and participants are free to join or exit at their convenience.

Once initiated, the voice chat remains accessible at the bottom of the group conversation for easy management. Group members can hop in or out at any time and view a live list of who’s connected. Like all WhatsApp calls and messages, voice chats are protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring complete privacy.

Here are the steps on how to start the video chat:
- Open your group chat.
- Tap the voice chat icon in the top-right corner.
- Select “Start Voice Chat” to begin.
- Group members will get a push notification inviting them to join (it won’t ring like a call).
- A banner at the bottom will display who’s currently in the voice chat.
Voice Chat is available only on your primary device. Even if you’re not actively in the chat, you can still see who’s participating through the chat header or the Calls tab. To manage notifications, you can mute messages and call alerts from the group’s info page. The voice chat will automatically end if all participants leave or if no one joins within 60 minutes. To exit the chat manually, just tap “Leave Voice Chat.”
