Since the times have changed, we are now habitual to Zoom meetings and classes in the past year. However, there are days when people look for an escape from those boring meetings. Worry not! There is now an app available – Zoom Escaper. The app lets you add an array of fake audio effects to your Zoom Call. It is a free web widget and is simple to use.
In simple terms, a tool that will play sounds so unbearable on your call that other people will want you to get off the line.
“My hope with Zoom Escaper is that people use it to escape Zoom calls and do less work,” says Sam Lavigne, the app’s creator. “I’ve been thinking about how sabotage might work in a digital context. Especially one where the means of production are also personal devices that mediate your social life”.
The application provides a library of annoying sounds to use as a get-out-of-Zoom-free-card. Zoom Escaper can replicate the sound of a bad connection- it gives all broken-up words and incomprehensible speech. Some are more frustrating sounds, like an echo, making you sound like you’re stuck in a time warp. This will end up annoying everyone on the video call who can no longer understand you and want to know whether you are, in fact, Zooming while stuck in a well.
The website states that the extension allows users to self-sabotage their audio stream. Zoom Escaper gives sounds like dogs barking, heavy wind, construction, a man weeping, and more. In order to allow users to use these features, however, the website requires permission to use the microphone. A VB-Audio audio-routing software is also necessary to use this extension. It would allow the system to shift the audio on Zoom from the computer to the Zoom Escaper extension.
On the other hand, Lavigne has also created a web extension called Zoom Deleter. It automatically detects the presence of the Zoom app on the user’s computer and automatically deletes it. The detection is continuous, Lavigne said.
