Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro and Galaxy On7 Pro were launched just two days after Samsung launched the Galaxy J2 2016 and the Galaxy J Max. These phones are all priced between Rs. 8,000 – 12,000, along with Galaxy J2, Galaxy J3 2016, Galaxy On5, and Galaxy On7. Consequently, the specs and design of these Galaxy devices are more or less the same, with a few minor tweaks here and there.

While the rear camera is 13MP, the front camera is only 5MP. One feature that will be useful to bikers is the S Bike Mode (first introduced in Galaxy J3). As for sensors, the phone only has Accelerometer and Proximity Sensor. Other sensors like Fingerprint Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Compass, and Gyroscope are missing.

Apart from the minor improvement in the memory configuration (from 1.5GB to 2GB RAM, and from 8GB to 16GB internal memory) and the slight upgrade from Android v5.1.1 (Lollipop) to Android v6.0.1 (Marshmallow), Galaxy On7 Pro seems to be Galaxy On7 just repackaged in a new box.

The phone has been priced at Rs. 11,990 in India and is available in two colour variants – Black and Gold.

    About the Phone

    Pros:

    • The display is decent.
    • Samsung’s TouchWiz UI performs smoothly.
    • The battery life is good, given the screen size.
    • The S Bike Mode can be useful for bikers.

    Cons:

    • The phone features an uninspiring and boring design.
    • The build quality of the phone is average.
    • No LED notifications.
    • The rear panel has a leathery-texture which looks tacky when compared to the contemporary models.
    • It lacks many sensors like Fingerprint Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Compass, and Gyroscope.
    • The performance of the front camera is poor.

In the modern competitive market flooded with phones featuring advanced specs and great designs at affordable prices, Samsung’s Galaxy On7 Pro appears to fade into the background.

As mentioned earlier, Galaxy On7 Pro looks precisely like Galaxy On7. It has a plastic body with chrome panelling on the side (just like many, many other Samsung devices). The plastic construction makes the phone look cheap, and the leather-like finish further hampers the look. The build quality, however, is good. Since the back is entirely removable, you can remove the battery, SIM cards, and micro USB card with ease.

The 5.5-inch HD display comes with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The TFT screen with 267 PPI offers decent viewing angles. And while the brightness levels are good, the phone fails to impress when it comes to colour reproduction. The touch response is good. Samsung did not equip the phone with any display protection like Corning Gorilla Glass.

Galaxy On7 weighs 171 grams, and its dimensions are 77.48 x 151.71 x 8.01 (mm). The bezels are slim, and the rounded corners of the phone allow for comfortable handling. On the right side, you will find the power button, and on the left lies the volume button. A downside to the buttons is that they are quite hard and recessed; as a result, you will need to press them hard every time. The bottom part of the phone houses the 3.5mm audio jack, the micro USB port, and the single mic.

Galaxy On7 Pro has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor coupled with Adreno 306 GPU, that promises enhanced graphical performance. This combination goes well with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB). Overall, the phone offers a smooth and lag-free performance for light-to-moderate usage including gaming, browsing, and the other day-to-day tasks.

A plus point is that Galaxy On7 Pro does not get extremely heated up while gaming or with continuous browsing/streaming.

Samsung Galaxy On7 features a CMOS 13MP rear camera with a flash and CMOS 5MP front camera. The rear camera is placed horizontally and just beside it lies the flash. It has various modes like Auto, Pro, Panorama, Continuous Shot, and Beauty Shot. There are also many effects to choose from.

The rear camera manages to capture bright photos with the right amount of detail in the daylight or well-lit settings. Although it may be an issue to get the camera to focus, when it does so, the sharpness and colours of the captured images is good. As opposed to this, the indoor shots lack clarity and detail. In low-lit environments, a lot of noise seems to creep in, making the photos blurry and inconsistent.

The phone has a 3000mAh removable battery (again, similar to Galaxy On7). Given the screen size and the processor of the Galaxy On7 Pro, the battery capacity is good enough. For normal to moderate usage (including calling, light browsing and gaming, and using social media apps), the battery can last a full day. However, if you are into hardcore gaming or online streaming, the battery life won’t suffice. The battery charge drops considerably for extended hours of gaming and browsing.

Connectivity options on the phone include Wi-Fi, Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS with A-GPS and Glonass, dual SIM, USB 2.0, 2G, 3G, and 4G with LTE support. NFC is missing.

Samsung’s Galaxy On7 Pro faces tough competition from various other phones in the market in the same price range, but with better specs. For instance, Moto G4, Redmi Note 3, Asus Zenfone 2, and Honor 5C, to name a few. Even at affordable prices, these phones manage to pack top-notch specs (metal body, powerful cameras, IPS LCD screen, Fingerprint Sensor, and so much more). In such a scenario, Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro doesn’t really stand a chance.
