Sony Xperia 10

Sony Xperia 10 is ahead of its time in delivering an incredible cinematic experience with its ‘director-special’ aspect ratio, but it sacrifices a lot on its battery and performance specifications.

Sony Xperia 10 is all about giving you a rich cinematic experience, true to the director’s lens. Priced at Rs. 28,990, the phone delivers the fantastic experience it promises, along with the capacity to capture and make your movies in that manner.

The 21:9 display is the main highlight of Sony Xperia 10. However, the phone is a bit ahead of its time, as there is not much content that could use the 21:9 aspect ratio of Sony Xperia 10. In other aspects, the phone falls short, arriving with a terrible battery and a mid-tier processor with mediocre performance. It is only recommended for people looking for a fantastic screen for their handsets.

The Sony Xperia 10 will drag your eyes towards it, not only because of its design but because of its unique structure. A few pros and cons of this set are:

  • The Sony Xperia 10 has a unique and handsome design for the experimental premium crowd.
  • The colours of the display are colourful and bright for an immersive experience.
  • The phone arrives with a 21:9 aspect ratio that is the aspect ratio meant for watching movies the way they must be watched.
  • The phone can click 21:9 videos and pictures which can put you in the director’s shoes.

  • The phone is very tall, making it not very pocketable.
  • It has a sluggish Snapdragon 600 series processor that can make the phone slow.
  • It has a below-average battery that cannot make the phone last for an entire day without making sacrificing like lowering brightness.
  • The camera performance is quite mediocre, with a drop in quality when the low-light performance is considered.
  • The photos clicked in 21:9 aspect ratio are not versatile and go off-the-centre f the screen when transferred to other devices without 21:9 aspect ratio screens.

The phone is like any average mid-range phone with only the 21:9 aspect ratio going for it. If you are a film buff who wants this particular aspect ratio, then this phone will be great for you. Otherwise, there are better phones with good battery and performance in the market. Sony Xperia 1 is a worthy alternative too.

Expert Opinion

Sony Xperia 10 is ahead of its time in delivering an incredible cinematic experience with its ‘director-special’ aspect ratio, but it sacrifices a lot on its battery and performance specifications.

The Xperia 10 comes with a 6-inch display with Full HD+ display and an aspect ratio of 21:9. The screen does not seem as impressive as the Xperia 1, but then, it’s suitable for the price range. The colours are fantastic, there’s an incredible 457 pixels per inch on offer. However, the only problem that you will face is that there is not a lot of content out there that will help you enjoy the 21:9 screen.

While many Netflix shows may have a 21:9 aspect ratio, most TV shows are still 16:9, making that content hard to find. You will also find the 21:9 aspect ratio screen challenging to deal with when it comes to gaming, since there are not many games with that aspect ratio.

The Sony Xperia 10 goes for a premium look with a metal rear and a glass front. Not only is it premium to feel but it also looks handsome. The phone is tall, with dimensions of 156 x 68 x 8.4mm, and remains quite slim. Unlike many of the flagships, it comes with a weight of 162g. The phone is designed for larger mitts. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the right side of the phone.

It is ergonomic for right-handed people though left-handed people may find it difficult to reach. The scanner is not built into the phone like it generally is in the predecessors of Sony phones. The camera is on the rear panel and bulges a bit, but not to an annoying degree. The phone comfortably settles in hand and without digging in your palms.

The Xperia 10 comes equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, which is a mid-range favourite – but it’s not something special. There will be times when the phone is going to be sluggish. The load times when opening apps are long, and while multitasking can be handled well enough, there are times when the apps start to crash. Many cheaper phones offer better performance, making the Xperia 10’s performance quite subpar.

The phone scores about 3,978 points in Geekbench, which is quite low, especially when compared to Moto G7 which gives you about 4661 points in the same test. Demanding games do not run properly and can experience frame drops. Plus, there is the problem of the 21:9 screen. While Sony boasts about Fortnite as one of the games for this aspect ratio, this phone does not support that game yet.

Xperia 10 comes with a dual-camera setup with 13MP with an f/2.0 aperture and a 5MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture used for bokeh effects. The primary camera is quite good – it is able to preserve the details of the scene, and the colours are reproduced well enough.

The shutter is a bit slow, and it takes a bit more time with moving objects. In low-light conditions, the pictures are grainy and quite disappointing. Moto G7 produces smoother images.

Regarding videos, the phone can shoot videos both in 21:9 format and 16:9 format. The 21:9 video looks fantastic on the phone but looks awkward on social media or someone else’s phone. The videos are beautiful, and it has stabilization, which irons out any jerks.

The Xperia 10 also comes with an 8MP selfie camera. The front camera works well and can click great selfies suitable for social media.

Sony Xperia 10 has a below- average battery, coming with a very low 2870 mAh juice pack. The battery is inadequate, especially considering the phone has a sizeable FullHD screen. With moderate use, it was not possible to chug the phone through the entire night. However, with the brightness brought down to 50%, it was possible to keep the phone just barely with low charge till the night.

Running an HD 90-minute video clip with Wi-Fi on and brightness maxed out saw that the battery fall by 27%. Xperia 10 Plus dropped by 27%, and Moto G7 dropped 22%, while a slightly expensive Honor 10 dropped only 17%. The phone comes with fast charging but no wireless charging. It can get from 0 to 100% in just over an hour.

Battery TypeLi-Ion

The Sony Xperia 10 does not have much to impress the audience. Its main feature is the 21:9 aspect ratio, but due to the lack of content, it is challenging to experience. The performance is just okay, but the battery is inferior on this set. The cameras happen to be passable and could be accepted if not Moto G7 came with better cameras at a lower price. The phone is only recommended for those people who want a cinematic experience with the 21:9 aspect ratio. For more powerful internals and the same aspect ratio, Xperia 10 Plus could be a great phone to go for.
