The Vivo Y83 Pro has killer looks that can put a whole range of phones to shame. Along with a great camera for the price, a good battery capacity, strong configuration, and fluent ease of operation, the phone provides seamless performance. With all high-end features compounded in a single piece, the Y83 Pro is bound to suit your needs.
Priced at ₹13,990, the Y83 Pro is a mid-range all-rounder. The device comes with looks that can shy a lot of flagship phones. Opting for the trendy and gorgeous water-drop notch, the phone has bezel-less edge-to-edge front and slim design.
The Vivo Y83 Pro looks sleek and well thought out. The screen has not been compromised for and it covers almost the entirety of the front. However, to keep prices low, Vivo has opted for a plastic body with a metallic polish coated on top to give it an extremely elegant and attractive finish. The device, at 155×73 mm, looks very stylish in a hand while only weighing 152 grams and being 7.70 mm thick.
The on-screen navigation does not compromise with the screen space. The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The speakers sit on the opposite end. The sounds are clear and punchy but can lose bass and get a bit distorted at high volumes. On top of the screen is the front camera along with the notification light. The fingerprint sensor sits on the back below the dual-rear cameras.
Although people have come to expect a great screen experience from mid-range devices, the Vivo Y83 Pro falls a little short of that mark. The 6.2-inch screen is full HD, with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a resolution of 720×1520 pixels and an average sharpness of 270 PPI. The pixel per inch count falls a lot short as compared to its competitors. This compromises on the delightful experience watching videos and playing games can be on the device. As is customary with IPS LCD touchscreens, the colours come off as vibrant and well saturated. The maximum brightness is good enough for the screen to be legible in direct sunlight and the user doesn’t face an issue in trying to figure out what’s on the screen.
A great bonus for phone droppers is the fact that Vivo has decided to protect the screen with the Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Vivo Y83 Pro is powered by the MediaTek MT6762 Helio P60 chipset – an octa-core processor that consists of eight Cortex A53s, clocking at 2GHz each. Along with the 4GB of RAM available on the phone, this renders lags virtually undetectable. Multitasking is a highly pleasant experience on the Y83 Pro. Yes, it might not be the most powerful processor available in the market, it gets its job very well done.
The Y83 Pro comes with an Android 8.1, Nougat, overlaid upon Vivo’s Funtouch OS 4.0. The Funtouch OS comes with its own smart assistant and is extremely intuitive to use.
The graphics needs are handled by the PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The phone can easily run graphic intensive games without significant frame drops that would ruin the gaming experience. The Y83 Pro features a “gaming mode” which disables all current notifications offering you more immersive gaming experience. A “picture-in-picture” function helps you access chats while gaming.
The phone does not get uncomfortably hot during intensive usage.
The Y83 Pro comes with 64GB of inbuilt storage which is expandable up to 256GB with the use of a dedicated microSD slot. Mounted with a fingerprint sensor, a compass, proximity sensor, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and a gyroscope, the phone packs in all the necessary sensors required in the present times. The phone also supports active noise cancellation, which is a great perk for enjoying music.
As is common in Vivo phones, the camera is nothing extraordinary but it does the job perfectly well. The Y83 Pro comes with dual rear cameras – a 13 megapixel + 2-megapixel image sensor, having f/2.2 and f/2.4 respectively. The smaller image sensor works as a depth sensor. The autofocus is powered by the PDAF, which helps speed up the focusing process in order to capture fleeting moments. The depth sensor captures the depth-of-field information in order to produce a bokeh mode.
The 8 megapixel – f/2.2 – the front camera is good enough to take selfies. Powered with AI recognition, the front camera has an “AI Face Beauty” feature that detects your gender, age, skin tone and texture, and lighting environment. The AI smooths out the texture and enhances complexion a little. The camera also features an artificial bokeh mode to satisfy your DSLR cravings.
The Vivo Y83 Pro is powered by a 3,260 mAh battery that is a decent power backup for a normal user. However, if you are a power user, you will be reaching for the charger by the second half of the day. And no, sadly, the phone does not support fast charging.
The phone comes with a great configuration, amazing looks, a decent camera and battery. The screen loses out a little on not being full HD, and the lack of fast charging and USB-C are drawbacks, but the value for money on the device is evidence why Vivo is great at what it does once more.
