Cons

  • The phone screen does not provide high frame rates.

Expert Opinion

Combining gaming and photography, the Xiaomi Black Shark is all set to capture the hearts of gamers with its fantastic design and hardware.

Display

The Xiaomi Black Shark has gone for a Full HD screen with a popular 18:9 aspect ratio. However, many competing phones like the OnePlus 6 and the Honor 10 has moved on to the newer 19:9 screens. The display, however, is quite good, with the large size and significant sharpness. It got an average brightness of 541 cd/m² which is distributed quite evenly at 95%. Hence, the brightness outdoors is quite sufficient enough for you to read. Plus, the phone has near-stable viewing angles, with the brightness going slightly flat in extreme angles.

Design

The Xiaomi Black Shark phone has an eccentric design suited for a gaming phone. It has a metallic green stripe frame covered the black case. On the left side, the button has a green edging to it, and green accents are present on the rear end. The black variant of the phone looks quite a killer. The case is of a metal build, but the rear centre is made of plastic. According to Xiaomi, this was not an accident but to offer a better group of the surface. On the front, the display has minimal side bezels, and the top and bottom bezels are not very thick either. Below the screen lies the fingerprint scanner. The phone does not bend in pressure since twisting did not make it creak. Plus, the phone weights at 190gm which is quite lightweight, considering the complex cooling mechanism present under the hood. The rounded corners also make it easy to hold.

Performance

One of Qualcomm’s topmost processors is kept under the hood of the Black Shark: the Snapdragon 845. It is an octa-core processor clocked to a speed of 2.8GHz. The phone is also equipped with a water-cooling system which will keep the phone cooled down. The phone also comes with Adreno 630, which is a great GPU and improves the frame rates of games that you play on it. Daily performance is buttery smooth though One Plus 6 does slightly better in web-browsing over Black Shark. While gaming is the forte of this gaming phone, there is one slight problem that this phone has. While in the Razer Phone, the display can go for high rates like 90fps, the Black Shark can only offer up to 60fps. However, there are no lags in gaming. There is also a GameDock software which can come up when you are vertically swiping over the fingerprint sensor. Memory cleaner and call blocker are some options here. There is also an option for gamepad. Xiaomi offers gamepad which can be connected to this phone via Bluetooth, but not many games support it.

Camera

Xiaomi Black Shark features a 12MP camera, which is supported by a secondary depth-sensing 20MP camera. Plus, it arrives with a 12MP selfie camera as well. The phone does not have any optical image stabilizer, and the zoom is limited to about 4x. The primary camera is quite good when the ideal light conditions present itself. However, at times, the exposure ends up being too long, which makes the brighter areas of the phone bloom up too much. However, the details remain adequate as a whole. When clicked in landscape mode, the phone is quite sharp. In low-light, the images are still decent enough though it does not reach the quality of iPhone X. The shutter speed is quite good though the details appear less discernible in challenging light conditions.

Regarding videos, the phone can click up to 4K video. The videos are quite high in terms of details. However, it does not have slow motion video capture technology.

The front camera tends to bloom up brighter areas too much, and the sharpness of the details stay a bit on the weaker side.

Battery

The Xiaomi Black Shark gets a fuel of 4000 mAh from its battery. It is the same as the Razer phone. It gets a high score in the Wi-Fi test of web browsing, reaching about 11 hours and 51 minutes, which is about 50 minutes shorter that what Razer phone got. However, it is clear that if you are not into intensive use, including gaming, then this phone can chug on for two days. Plus, the phone comes with fast charging supporting QuickCharge 3.0. It means that you can get it charged to 100% within 2 hours.

Verdict

Xiaomi Black Shark is a suitable gaming phone, and it keeps it mostly gamer-friendly. However, that is not the entire thing that the phone is going for. The phone is reasonable in its photography technology, and quite stylish in design. In terms of display, the phone is bright and has accurate colour reproduction. Overall, the Xiaomi Black Shark is reasonably priced and a recommended phone for any gamers out there.
