    Final thoughts

It’s been almost two years since the launch of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft‘s previous entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. However, the company is now set to shake things up with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a new entry to the universe. The game will feature Basim Ibn Ishaq, a character from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as the protagonist. With the release of an official trailer, the game is set to be a prequel to Eivor’s adventures. Although the game will take some time to release, let’s take a look at all that we need to know about the next game, Assassin’s Creed Mirage!

Cinematic Trailer

At the Ubisoft Forward showcase held recently, the company provided a beautiful cinematic trailer of Assassin’s Creed Mirage. You can check out the trailer below:

As you can see from the trailer, there’s plenty to unpack about the game. While gameplay elements haven’t been shown in the trailer, we have a few ideas about where the game could be headed.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Release Date

At the end of the cinematic trailer, Ubisoft stated that the game would be coming to consoles next year. Effectively, we expect the Assassin’s Creed Mirage release date to be sometime in Spring 2023. Ubisoft has stepped away from the annual Assassin’s Creed releases. Instead, it has increased the development cycle for significant entries to the franchise. This makes it slightly more challenging to predict the exact date for release. Nonetheless, if there aren’t any major delays, you can expect the game to release by mid-2023, at the latest.

The Story

Assassin's Creed Mirage Screenshot

This particular Assassin’s Creed game will be set around 20 years before the event of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. With Basim being one of the key characters in the latter, his promotion to the protagonist of the next game isn’t very surprising. Although this is another massive Assassin’s Creed game, it will serve more as a spin-off rather than a flagship Assassin’s Creed game. The story will follow Basim’s rise from a petty thief to a Master Assassin roaming the streets of Baghdad. In fact, the story is set so far into the past that the Assassin Order isn’t even known as such. Instead, the order is called The Hidden Ones. This information alone should give us enough to chew on for the next few months.

The game act more like a coming-of-age story, with Basim coming under the tutelage of his mentor, Roshan. We expect to understand more about Basim’s story and his link to the Norse God Loki, as was seen in Valhalla.

The Gameplay

Assassin's Creed Mirage is a homage to the first game in the series

The Assassin’s Creed games follow set gameplay mechanics, which are often refined with each new release. Since Mirage is set in 861 AD, we don’t expect modern elements to the gameplay mechanics. We could also see some out-of-Animus quests in the game. Nonetheless, the gameplay will contain all the refinements of the previous Assassin’s Creed games and might even feature some improvements. The movement and general gameplay should be similar to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Since Baghdad will be the game’s geographical setting, Ubisoft has confirmed that four different districts will be available for exploration. These include Karkh and the Round City, which was a massive part of Baghdad’s Golden Age when the city was leading the world in philosophy, science, and technology. Moreover, the Assassin fortress, Alamut, will also be present in the game. OG players will know this to be the parent fortress of Masyaf, the Assassin stronghold shown in the first Assassin’s Creed game and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

In terms of Basim himself, there will be some upgrades. His eagle will give you a bird’s eye view of the area and provide information on various assassination methods or how to approach a situation. Moreover, Basim himself will generally feel more agile, with rapid-fire assassinations a possibility, thanks to an ability to slow down time.

Ubisoft has stated that Mirage will contain elements from all the previous mainline Assassin’s Creed games. Moreover, it’s also supposed to be a homage to the first ever Assassin’s Creed game. It seems that with Mirage, Ubisoft is indirectly taking away the possibility of a remake regarding Altair’s adventures.

Price

The game will ship in three editions. The standard edition will cost $50, the deluxe edition will retail for $60, and the collector’s edition will sell at $150. Roughly, these convert to INR 3977, INR 4772, and INR 12000, respectively.

Platforms

The game is set to be released on PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and even the Amazon Luna. Ubisoft Bordeaux is developing the game, and the company has promised that it will push the boundaries of stealth mechanics seen in previous Assassin’s Creed games.

Other titles

Since Assassin’s Creed Mirage won’t be the next flagship entry in the series, Ubisoft has given us a sneak peek into three new titles. The first is Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, which will be set in Japan, the second is Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, and the third is Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade. A more prominent, grander game hub, Assassin’s Creed Infinity, is still in development and will take a few more years to be ready. We expect Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade, and Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe to be unveiled earlier, before integrating themselves into Infinity.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red

You can check out the trailer for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red below. As you can see from the trailer, it will be set in feudal Japan. There are estimates that the game could take inspiration from titles such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe

The second game is Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. Hexe has even fewer details regarding its context. Nonetheless, rumours indicate that the game could be set in the 16th Century, with supernatural elements surrounding the century’s Witch Trials. The tone will be much darker than previous game entries, with the Holy Roman Empire as the focus.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade

The final new Assassin’s Creed game is Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade, which is set in Ancient China. Unlike Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which will be comparatively linear, Jade is set to be a more open-world title. Moreover, it’s in development solely for mobile devices. So, the entire Assassin’s Creed open-world formula is being reworked for touch-based controls. It’s set in China, in the year 215 BCE, and you’ll also be able to create your unique Assassin avatar!

Final thoughts

Although Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be a spin-off, it’s already generated plenty of hype. It’s been quite a while since we’ve received a new Assassin’s Creed game, and Mirage could be the perfect goodbye to the current generation of Assassin’s Creed games. If a new game engine is implemented, expect future generations of Assassin’s Creed games to include new mechanics and superior graphics. Until then, let us know your thoughts on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game in the comment section below!
