  • Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce a new Apple Upgrade programme that will make it easier for customers to finance and upgrade multiple Apple devices. According to recent reports, the company is expected to launch the new service in the US on July 28, replacing its existing iPhone Upgrade Program with a broader offering.

The new programme is said to be developed in partnership with buy now, pay later provider Klarna. Unlike the current plan, which focuses only on iPhones, the upcoming Apple Upgrade programme is expected to include iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. However, Apple has not announced whether the service will be introduced in India.

Know how the Apple Upgrade Programme will work

The upcoming Apple Upgrade programme aims to give customers more flexibility when buying premium Apple products through monthly payments. Reports suggest that users will be able to finance eligible devices, upgrade before completing the payment period, or return the device at the end of the agreement.

The financing periods are expected to vary by product category.

    Expected financing terms:

    • iPhones: 24 months
    • Apple Watches: 24 months
    • iPads: 36 months
    • Macs: 36 months

Unlike Apple’s previous financing model, the new programme is expected to work as a subscription style lease instead of a traditional retail loan. Klarna will reportedly conduct a soft credit check before approving customers. Apple is also expected to promote the programme with lower monthly payments, making its premium products more accessible.

What’s Different From the Current Program?

The biggest change is the expansion beyond iPhones. The current iPhone Upgrade Program only supports iPhones with a 24 month financing option. The new programme is expected to include several Apple product categories under one plan.

However, there are a few important differences.

Under the previous programme, customers owned the iPhone after completing all monthly payments, and AppleCare+ was included. With the new Apple Upgrade programme, users may have to make a final payment if they want to keep the device or return it once the agreement ends. AppleCare+ is also expected to be sold separately instead of being included.

Reports also suggest that some products may not qualify for the programme.

    Expected excluded devices:

Apple is also expected to stop accepting new registrations for the existing iPhone Upgrade Program after the new service launches. While the programme could make upgrading Apple devices easier for customers in the US, there is currently no official information about its availability in India.
