Description

A competitor to Google’s plaudit-worthy Pixel 3a, the OPPO Reno Z aims at dominating the mid-level range of the smartphone market. While the OPPO Reno Z doesn’t have the cameras or the chipset to beat the Pixel 3a, it is far from bad. In fact, its all-round performance, including stable battery life, a magnificent display, and several fascinating high-end features, earning it rave reviews.

Highlights

The OPPO Reno Z is action-packed, affordable and provides for an impressive display. It does have its set of pros and cons, though.

Pros

– The OPPO Reno Z taps into a battery which lasts long

– The display is fantastic and worth the money

– The design gives a premium feel to the device

– It is affordable and offers several high-end features

Cons

– The functionality of its cameras are limited

– Its chipset could have been better

– OPPO Reno’s distinctive pop-up camera has been removed

– ColorOS delays software updates and adds bloatware

Overall, while the OPPO Reno Z is affordable with due respect to the features it provides for, its camera and chipset could have been better.

Expert Opinion

The OPPO Reno Z provides for a plethora of high-end features usually seen in more expensive smartphones on the market.

Display

With its 2340×1080 display, the OPPO Reno Z has a sharp screen. While its colors are slightly warm when viewed by the naked eye, its overall display is decent when taking into consideration its price and other features. Its in-screen fingerprint sensor is a delight, which makes opening your phone easy and quick. While some may consider its ‘tear-drop’ notch a deal-breaker, it is unobtrusive and does not occupy much screen space.

Display Resolution1080 x 2340 pixels

Design

The OPPO Reno Z, with its 6.4-inch AMOLED display, is a mesmerizing prospect at its price range. It looks more attractive than the Pixel 3a and has a glass back. The OPPO Reno Z comes with an in-screen fingerprint scanner, a dewdrop notch, and dinky bezels. Complete with a Dolby Atmos stereo speaker system, the smartphone is perfect for watching videos and your favorite TV shows as well, while not burning a hole in your pocket at the same time.

Performance

The OPPO Reno Z comes with a MediaTek Helio P90 processor. MediaTek chipsets aren’t all that fascinating, taking into consideration the fact that they are generally reserved for mid-level range smartphones. Its user-interface is slow-feeling, though it is not as sluggish as other MediaTek chipsets of the past.

What does boost the performance of the OPPO Reno Z is its 8 GB RAM, which is quite impressive, taking into consideration its price tag. The smartphone comes with a dedicated gaming app, Game Space, which diverts all processing power towards gaming when a game is launched on the smartphone. The smartphone does not experience much lag when gaming, or while performing complicated tasks like editing images or importing high-resolution videos.

Camera

The OPPO Reno Z may not have the cameras to beat its nearest competitor, the Pixel 3a, but they are decent. The smartphone has two rear cameras, the first being a 48MP sensor with f/1.7 lens, and the second, a 5MP depth-sensing camera with an f/2.4 lens. The OPPO Reno, too, has the same camera specifications, the OPPO Reno Z not offering an upgrade.

More was expected of the Reno Z, as the smartphone is not equipped with a telephoto lens and ultra-wide angle – Common to most modern smartphone cameras. The absence of the two is sorely felt when clicking pictures. Its Night Mode is not all that great as well, as its image quality is compromised with at the expense of bright photographs.

Battery

The OPPO Reno Z is powered by a 4035mAh battery and its VOOC Flash Charge 3.0 technology– Stellar. When streaming videos, the smartphone loses 6-8% of its battery per hour. When performing other taxing activities like gaming, the OPPO Reno Z loses about 12-15% charge per hour. Charging the smartphone takes longer than what would be expected from a 4035mAh battery-powered smartphone.

Verdict

Taking into consideration its price tag of 25,290 INR, and its range of features, the OPPO Reno Z is a worthy competitor to other smartphones in its price range. While the Pixel 3a has far superior cameras, the Reno Z is attractive to look at and feels great when handled. It offers a top-notch screen, a robust performing battery, stellar features, and a decent camera. It gets almost all the necessary basics right. If you are looking for a budget smartphone with a set of excellent features, look no further than the OPPO Reno Z.
