Talking about the design, the Samsung Galaxy A31 looks identical to its siblings Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71. Available in Prism Crush Red, Prism Crush Blue, Prism Crush Black, and Prism Crush White, the back panel of Galaxy A31 has a rather interesting diamond-shaped effect and it is extremely glossy to hold. The rear has an L-shaped quad-camera setup housed in a Galaxy A-series famed rectangular camera setup and that’s pretty much all about the rear panel.
Flip the phone and you’ll see a glossy display with decently sized bezels and a thick chin but unlike any Pixel devices. There’s a waterdrop notch on top of the screen, a SIM tray to the left, a power button and volume rocker to the right, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a speaker grille, and a USB-C port on the bottom and that’s all about it.
In terms of the display, Samsung Galaxy A31 sports a superb Super AMOLED 6.4” panel with 84.9% screen-to-body ratio, 1080×2400 pixels resolution at 411 PPI that makes up its magnificent display. This is a slightly smaller display than Galaxy A51 but hey, it’s acceptable since it is barely recognisable. The display is also 20:9 ratio which makes it easier to watch movies, unlike smaller aspect ratios you would find on other smartphones.
Under the hood, you’ll get a MediaTek Helio P65 octa-core processor at 2.0GHz at max frequency in Samsung Galaxy A31. It is paired with a 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage along with a dedicated slot for microSDXC card that you can use to extend its storage capacity. The phone runs on Android 10-based OneUI 2.0 interface where you get the best of both worlds i.e. the Android OS and the custom-made OneUI that Samsung has made for its smartphones.
The Galaxy A31 sports an L-shaped rear camera setup arranged in a rectangular camera bump. The quad-camera setup includes 48MP primary sensor with 0.8micron pixel size, PDAF and an aperture of f/2.0 followed by an 8MP ultrawide sensor with an aperture of f/2.2, 1.12micron pixel size and finally, there are two 5MP dedicated macro and depth sensors with an aperture of f/2.4. The rear camera setup allows users to take a series of shots from portrait to macro including videos at up to 1080p at 30fps. At the front, Galaxy A31 packs a single 20MP primary selfie shooter with f/2.2 aperture housed in a waterdrop-shaped notch. The front camera too can shoot videos at 1080p@30fps.
The Samsung Galaxy A31 sports a massive 5,000 mAh Li-Po battery under the hood and gives an awesome battery life. This gives the phone an upper hand in this age when the battery is a crucial aspect. The phone is packed with a 15W fast charging which although isn’t super-fast but it definitely reduces the overall time it takes to charge the battery.
A successor to Galaxy A30, the Galaxy A31 does show a massive upgrade with the powerful but decent camera setup, a brilliant display, an excellent battery life and a few other features here and there. Pf course with Helio P65, you are looking at a slightly underperforming smartphone and while it is priced at somewhat higher than it should, it is perhaps a promising phone to prefer. It is however, competing with the likes of Realme 6, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro and others.
