Apple has officially brought its contactless payment service to India, giving iPhone and Apple Watch users another way to make digital payments. The Apple Pay India launch initially supports eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards, with more banks expected to join the platform later.
The service works at compatible contactless payment terminals and supported online merchants. Apple is entering a market where digital payments are already widely used, and the company points to the growing availability of NFC-enabled terminals as one reason for the launch.
Apple Pay India: Eligible iPhones And Apple Watches
Apple Pay is available on a range of relatively recent iPhone and Apple Watch models. The initial requirements include:
• iPhone XR or newer
• iOS 18 or later
• Apple Watch Series 6 or newer
• watchOS 11 or later
• Eligible Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card

Users can add an eligible card to Apple Wallet and use their iPhone or Apple Watch at supported contactless terminals. Apple says the service will initially be available across categories such as food and drink, travel, fashion and lifestyle.
Apple also plans to expand support to more banks, merchants and apps over time. Support for Mac is expected to arrive in the future.
How Will It Work In India
Using Apple Pay is designed to be a quick tap based payment process. At a compatible payment terminal, iPhone users can authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode before holding the phone near the terminal. Depending on the iPhone model, users can start the payment by double clicking the side or Home button.
Apple Watch users can also authenticate and tap their watch at a supported terminal.
Security is another key part of the service. Apple Pay uses tokenisation, meaning the actual card number is not stored on the device or Apple’s servers and is not shared with merchants. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is stored in the device's Secure Element.
Apple Pay is already available in more than 90 countries and regions. Its India launch marks the expansion of the existing service into one of the world's largest digital payments markets.
