God of War Ragnarok Release Date – Final Thoughts

The God of War 2018 reboot is a masterpiece of a game. From exceptional storytelling to brutal combat to gorgeous graphics, Santa Monica Studios pushed its limits in every aspect. With the God of War Ragnarok release date upon us, it’s time to take a closer look at this upcoming PlayStation 5 game. Although the initial God of War trilogy received unanimous acclaim from both critics and the audience, the 2018 reboot aimed for something different. The result was a more story-driven gameplay, still utilising the excellent combat mechanics and overall level design to the fullest. With the upcoming sequel, Santa Monica Studios hopes to add more extensive aspects in each dimension to the game.

God of War Ragnarok will look to put the players in the shoes of Kratos and his son, Atreus. The father-son duo must leave Midgard and travel to newer realms, encountering monsters and angered Norse gods as they try to unravel the myths uncovered in the first game. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the essential details for God of War Ragnarok!

God of War Ragnarok Release Date

Although Santa Monica Studios was eyeing an earlier 2022 launch date, the company was set back due to a few unforeseen delays. Nonetheless, the game is set for release on November 9, 2022. The sequel will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from this date onwards.

However, if the owners of the PlayStation 4 decide to upgrade to a PlayStation 5, they’ll have to pay $10 extra. This move comes as a surprise since God of War Ragnarok was initially slated to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive back when it was announced in 2020. Nonetheless, it bodes well for owners of previous generation consoles and PC owners.

God of War Ragnarok PC?

There’s no official word yet on whether Sony will allow God of War Ragnarok to be released on PC. However, the 2018 reboot was brought to PC at the beginning of 2022. In fact, multiple previously exclusive PlayStation games have been ported to PC, including the likes of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming to PC on November 18.

Moreover, Sony recently acquired Nixxes Software, a company renowned for porting console games to PC. Sony has stated outright that they’d prefer to port half of the annual PlayStation releases to PC. Considering this, there’s a perfect chance that we might be seeing God of War Ragnarok on PC. Nonetheless, no official announcement has been made in this regard. So, we’ll have to wait until Sony makes an official announcement regarding this issue.

The Story So Far

God of War Ragnarok Release Date

PlayStation recently shared an important story reveal trailer for God of War Ragnarok. According to the trailer, it’s clear that a few years have passed since the events in God of War (2018). In fact, Atreus has grown older and has started to show off his giant genetics. Moreover, Kratos and Atreus will have to face Ragnarok, the mythical Norse end of days.

There will be a bunch of enemies to face, including new monsters through both primary and side quests. Old foes such as Freya return in a quest to avenge their fallen kin. This list also includes Thor, which will lead to one of the most anticipated fights in gaming history. Apart from this, a growing Atreus brings with him a streak of Rebellion. As for the environments and context, the story will take place over all the Nine Realms. In the first game, only six were explored. The other realms, Vanaheim, Asgard, and Svartalfheim, have also been added to the game.

A few new characters have been added to the mix as well. Players will get their first glimpse of Angrboda, who is one of the last remaining giants. Additionally, Kratos and Atreus will interact with Tyr, joining hands with him to defeat Thor and Odin.

Story trailer

In September 2022, Sony released a Story Trailer for the game. You can watch the trailer below:

It’s clear that God of War Ragnarok will focus on the relationship between Atreus and Kratos. With Atreus finally coming into his own and realising the powers of a demi-god, he expresses his desire for what the pair should be doing and the direction they must take.

There’s plenty at stake here, with both of them battling against the Norse gods and their prophesized end of the world. Will Atreus make a name for himself through his own ways, or will he follow the bloodied path of his father? This is the primary question the trailer seems to be presenting to the audience.

Gameplay

Most of the original gameplay from the God of War 2018 reboot returns in God of War Ragnarok. The single-shot camera angle remains the same, as it doesn’t cut from the game, even if the game is loading. This means you’ll be able to control Kratos from the over-the-shoulder angle. Moreover, the early hours of gameplay show that the first few hours of the game almost feel like an expansion of the first game.

This isn’t necessarily a problem or a massive leap from the previous games. After all, the change of style and gameplay from God of War 3 to God of War 2018 was far greater. Nonetheless, Santa Monica Studios wants to remind the player of the game’s roots and spend time with the characters.

Combat

Coming to the general combat, God of War Ragnarok continues to have the same brutal and engaging combat that made its predecessor so much fun to play. Additionally, the developers have stated that they wanted to make the combat seem familiar, yet add a fresh flair to it. This time around, players will have more choices in combat styles. After all, there will be new enemy types, such as the Dreki or the Stalker. Playing against these foes will require players to change tactics and experiment to find what works best for them. From defensive tactics to fast-paced combinations, the player will have to use every weapon and idea in their arsenal to fight against a myriad of enemies.

Enemies

Since this is a new game that dives deeper into Norse mythology, it seems reasonable for the developers to add new enemy types to challenge the player. While the enemy types and creatures that Kratos and Atreus come across will be varied, it’s the battle(s) with Freya and Thor that players look forward to most.

Freya’s desire for revenge against Kratos for killing her son will know no bounds. Apart from being one of the most powerful Vanir magicians, she’s also an accomplished warrior, adamant about using whatever means necessary to eliminate Kratos. Moreover, the battle between Kratos and Thor will be legendary. After all, Thor is one of the mightiest Norse gods, killing most of the Giants singlehandedly. Kratos will have to deal with Thor’s bloodlust, especially after the former killed Thor’s sons and half-brothers.

You can expect more of these larger-than-life battles in this new God of War game. Santa Monica Studios is known for its creation of majestic action set-pieces, and God of War Ragnarok will not be any different.

End Game

The developers have claimed that God of War Ragnarok will be the last game featuring the Norse setting. This effectively makes the two God of War games a duology, with new pastures to explore for additional games.

It’s unclear whether Kratos will be the lead character in later games, as Atreus could be a worthy successor. However, there could be more to explore in the series, especially since the first game showed glimpses of Egyptian, Japanese, and Celtic mythology. It’ll be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here.

DLC Incoming?

Considering the God of War Ragnarok release date, it’s far too early to tell if there will be any Downloadable Content (DLC) for the game. The only major updates that the previous game saw were new armour sets, live tuning of the gameplay, and the addition of the New Game+ Mode. However, you can get extra content if you’ve preordered the game and bought different editions, which will include armour sets and weapon skins.

God of War Ragnarok Release Date – Final Thoughts

Although God of War Ragnarok was announced far earlier, the game is finally set to hit the shelves. Early reviews are in, and the gaming community is collectively praising every aspect of the game. Although it might feel familiar to the first game, there will be noteworthy additions and subtle changes to the gameplay. With new characters, armour sets, weapons, enemies, and story elements to discover, there’s plenty of content to excite even newcomers to the franchise. Hopefully, Sony won’t make PC players wait too long and will release the game on the platform as soon as possible.
