According to recent reports, WhatsApp is beginning to test end-to-end encrypted online cloud backups on Android. Everyone is aware of a significant vulnerability in the end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp conversations.

WhatsApp only covers chats that are present within the WhatsApp application with end-to-end encryption. But if you upload those chats as a backup to your cloud storage; the end-to-end encryption coverage stops and your private chats are easily accessible to malicious parties and prying eyes.

WhatsApp Testing end-to-end Encrypted Cloud Backups

According to The Verge, WhatsApp has announced its beta version for Android (2.21.15.5), which contains a test for end-to-end encrypted cloud backups, as stated in a report by WABtaInfo. Once you opt for this WhatsApp beta version that end-to-end encrypts your WhatsApp cloud backups, the loophole is shut, and no malicious party will be able to access your personal WhatsApp messages and conversation history.

However, according to Engadget, the WhatsApp test is still in beta, and it takes additional steps to assure that your cloud backups are end-to-end encrypted. To begin, users will need to have a separate password in order to restore their WhatsApp chat backups. Now, if you lose that password by accident, you also lose your encrypted WhatsApp backup, and there is no way to recover from that loss.

Users can also generate a 64-digit encrypted key that will be essential if they wish to decrypt your WhatsApp messages. If you lose that key, you also lose your WhatsApp cloud backup. As a result, one must exercise extreme caution when dealing with these caveats.

According to recent stories, WhatsApp is gradually moving away from the need for a mobile phone to use it. The company’s multi-device syncing function will allow users to use their WhatsApp without requiring smartphone connectivity; which is a great move as more and more people rely on WhatsApp for their daily communication.
