Review Summary

Motorola has expanded its Moto G family for 2022, and after some impressive performances from the Moto G51 and Moto G31, we now have the more expensive Motorola Moto G71 5G as a potential Redmi Note competitor. The phone has a lot going for it, including the fact that it is the first device in India to use Qualcomm’s brand-new Snapdragon 695 chipset. Motorola Moto G71 5G boasts a powerful mid-range chipset, 13 5G bands, 4X4 MIMO Carrier Aggregation, a good camera layout, an AMOLED display, no ads in the UI. It also features a big 5000mAh battery which will easily last a whole day even with heavy use, and supports 33W fast charging.

The phone costs Rs. 18,999, which puts it in the sub-Rs. 20K pricing range. For the asking price, the Moto G71 5G falls into the upper mid-range category. Motorola Moto G71 5G Review

Motorola appears to be on a run this year, with a continuous stream of new devices scheduled for launch in 2022. The Moto G71 5G is one of the most latest devices to hit the Indian market. The new phone follows the Moto G31 and the Moto G51 5G, both of which were released recently. Despite certain similarities, the Motorola Moto G71 5G separates out from the crowd thanks to a few standout features.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor is one of them, and the Moto G71 5G is the first smartphone in India to come with it. The new Moto G71 5G also includes an OLED display for a more immersive experience. Motorola has now cut down some specifications, such as the lack of stereo speakers and a compass sensor.

Nonetheless, Motorola has brought competitive features for the price of Rs 18,999, and it performs well in real life as well. Even when compared to the competition, the Motorola Moto G71 5G outperforms nearly all other smartphones in the same price range.
Let’s dive in and see if it’s worth buying the latest Motorola Moto G71 5G.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Design and Build

The new Motorola Moto G71 5G is a typical mid-range smartphone. The back panel is made of plastic and comes in two colours: Neptune Green and Arctic Blue. Despite this, the phone is extremely strong, and the build quality does not appear to be cheap or low-cost. Until you expose the Moto G71 to the sun, it has the same bland look as the affordable Moto G31. This, too, is made of polycarbonate, but the back is made to look like glass, thanks to the matte finish and subtle colour gradient. The curved rectangular camera hump receives additional detailing, while the Moto branding neatly masks the fingerprint scanner.

The front side is dominated largely by the screen and a noticeably fat chin that appears out of the spot on a smartphone from 2022. Although there is no Gorilla Glass, Motorola claims that the display can endure moderate abuse. So far, I haven’t noticed any scratches. There is no pre-applied screen protection, and it is not included in the box as well. The box does, however, include a plastic case. Furthermore, the device’s back curves softly into its frame, improving the user’s grip in the hand. The phone has a light feel to it and can be easily used with one hand.

The Motorola Moto G71 5G features a water-repellent build as well as the standard connectivity options such as a USB Type-C port for charging. It also has a headphone jack, which is missing from a lot of expensive mid-range smartphones nowadays. The phone has two nano-SIM card slots but no microSD card slot for expanding memory.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Display

The Motorola Moto G71 5G has a 6.4-inch Max Vision OLED display featuring FHD+ resolution. The display has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, a 409 PPI, with a 60Hz refresh rate. The Motorola phone has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a touch panel that covers 88.8% of the active area. Furthermore, the screen’s touch response was satisfactory, and the display has some sort of Gorilla glass-equivalent protection on top that should help to prevent scratches and scuffs.

The top of the display has a punch-hole cutout that ensures that your viewing experience or gaming sessions are uninterrupted. I watched a few episodes of Money Heist on the Motorola Moto G71 5G, and they were well worth my time. In addition, I played a few games, and the OLED display enhances everything.

The Motorola Moto G71 5G’s max brightness is another interesting display feature. It has a peak brightness of 700 nits. I used my smartphone outside on a daily basis and had no problems. I didn’t have to concentrate or adjust the brightness manually. If you use your smartphone outside on a daily basis, this is another bonus to consider.

Overall, Motorola has chosen a high-quality display, so there will be no issues while playing games or watching movies.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Performance

Under the hood, the Motorola Moto G71 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset with an Adreno 619 GPU. One of the Moto G71 5G’s unique aspects is that this is the first smartphone to feature this processor. It outperforms the previous Snapdragon 732G and even the 750G. The processor is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage by default, with no option for memory expansion.

I played a few of the popular battle royale games on the device and found it to heat up quickly, which does not get any better with the phone’s plastic back panel. However, there seems to be no lag when using the Motorola Moto G71 5G for everyday operations like surfing the internet, using social media apps, making phone calls, and so on.

Coming back to gaming, I ran BGMI which supports HD graphics with High FPS settings. Even having the graphics set to the ‘Smooth’ setting, the device was not able to run the game at 60fps, which is kind of sad. While playing Call of Duty Mobile on the Motorola G71 5G, the scene remains unchanged, with the graphics settings set to High graphics with Max FPS, or Very High graphics with Very High FPS, respectively.

Overall, the Motorola Moto G71 5G will work really well in everyday life, and you will face no issues using it.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Software

Motorola Moto G71 5G runs Android 11 and features a dedicated Motorola app for personalization and customization. Android 12 is the most latest operating system, and it would’ve been better if the device came with Android 12 preinstalled. To put it another way, the phone comes with really no bloatware and gets going with the company’s MyUX interface.
Moto’s typical advantage is a fast, “clean,” perfectly optimised Android with no shells. There are some unique features, such as the Peek Display option. When you hold the smartphone in your hands, this screen appears, with a dark background and low brightness to conserve battery.

And, of course, the Moto Functions, which are programmed in a separate application, must not be overlooked. We’re discussing gesture control, design themes, and other options (for example, you can activate the flashlight with a shake, and so on).
During the game, you can open apps in a separate window, although your options are limited. There are also some other tweaks for gamers. The ability to split the display into two sections is available, though, not all apps support it.

Motorola Moto G71 5G will soon receive an Android 12 update, and according to recent sources, most Motorola smartphones will start receiving Android 12 updates from February 2022.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Cameras

The Motorola Moto G71 5G has a vertically mounted triple-camera layout with an LED flash on the back. The phone comes with a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and Quad Pixel technology. An 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture are among the other sensors.
A 16MP f/2.2 camera is also embedded in the front punch-hole cutout for selfies and video calling. There are many shooting modes on the back cameras, as well as video stabilisation and video snapshot. It also has dual capture, timelapse, shot colour, and other features.

I took several photos with the Motorola Moto G71 5G in various lighting conditions. In environments and outdoors with well lighting conditions, I found them to be pretty good. It’s not the same if you’re inside or in a dimly lit environment. In fact, the handset’s post-processing does an excellent job of bringing out the details in the shadows. However, the photos were sometimes overexposed. Furthermore, the pictures had a lot of noise when zoomed closer. On the Moto G71 5G, users may experiment with exposure and other camera settings to improve their photos and videos.

The wide-angle photos, on the other hand, fall short of expectations. For one thing, even with plenty of light, the images come out grainy. Furthermore, at a closer crop, the photographs appear fuzzy and lack detail around the edges of the picture. Switching to the phone’s macro sensor also allows you to get pretty close to the subject, but the photos will be lacking in sharpness.

The 16MP front camera on Motorola Moto G71 5G is capable of taking decent selfies. Photos are appealing, but they often overexpose faces, and the quality decreases even with minor camera shakes. Furthermore, as the selfies are cropped closer, they lose their sharpness. Similarly, the low-light images are good, and the phone’s night mode pulls out a photo’s details more clearly. However, the smartphone puts a lot of noise into the frame as a result, so it’s like you win some and lose some here.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Battery

The Motorola Moto G71 5G has a 5,000 mAh battery and supports 33W fast charging. The box includes a type-C cable as well as a 33W fast charging adaptor. The Indian market currently offers most phones in the mid-range sector with a 5,000 mAh battery capacity as well as some sort of fast charging support. Nevertheless, the battery lasts for a good duration, thanks to the Snapdragon 695 SoC’s power efficiency and improved battery life.

The battery of the Motorola Moto G71 5G is adequate, as it can easily last a day without recharging. I only noticed that the battery ran out quicker during long gaming sessions. However, if you use the smartphone for other purposes and run other apps, you may easily get a full day out of it on a single charge.

The 33W charger can completely charge the device from 0 to 100 per cent in around 1 hour and 10 minutes, which is not really so fast.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

There are no stereo speakers on the Motorola Moto G71 5G; instead, it comes with a single bottom-firing speaker. Regardless of the fact that the mono speaker is loud enough to enjoy YouTube videos and even movies without headphones, Motorola could have included stereo speakers. Motorola has also included a 3.5mm audio jack, which is a welcome addition.
It also contains a secondary noise cancellation microphone and carrier aggregation, both of which will be quite useful during calls. All in all, the sound and the overall call quality are great, and there are no issues. N1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77, and n78 are among the 13 5G bands available on the Motorola G71 5G.

The Motorola Moto G71 5G sports a fingerprint scanner built in the Moto symbol on the back, which allows for quick unlocking. For further security, Motorola has added support for face unlocking. I would say the face unlock works well during the day but at night, I had to go with the fingerprint scanner.

Motorola Moto G71 5G Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Layout with a water-repellent finish.
  • Pure Android 11 OS
  • OLED display
  • Rapid-response rear-mounted scanner
  • 33W rapid charging
  • NFC and 5G connectivity are built-in

Cons

  • No Corning Gorilla Glass
  • It lacks HDR higher refresh rate
  • There is no additional storage
  • No stereo speakers
  • Cannot capture 4K footage
Verdict

In the Indian market, the Motorola Moto G71 5G is a fair recommendation in the mid-range segment. If you have a budget of less than Rs. 20,000, the Moto G71 5G is a good option. The immersive OLED panel, the Snapdragon 695’s seamless performance, future-proofing with 5G connectivity, and the pure Stock Android experience are all significant plus factors in my opinion.

The cameras could have been better, and the lack of a high-refresh-rate display is a downside. Keep in mind that the phone lacks stereo speakers and has a plastic back panel. So, if you don’t mind these drawbacks, go ahead and buy the Motorola Moto G71 5G; otherwise, check out the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, which is a 4G smartphone, or wait for the launch of Redmi Note 11 Pro.
