Google Officially Ends Photos Backup Support In Drive For Desktop Mode

Google Photos backup for desktop mode is no more. Google has officially ended Google Photos backup support in its Drive for desktop application from 10 August 2026. The change affects users who previously selected computer folders in Drive for desktop and relied on the app to automatically upload photos and videos to Google Photos. Google began warning users about the transition in June, giving them time to move their backup setup.

    Why It Matters?

The change does not delete photos already stored in Google Photos, but it can interrupt future automatic uploads. Desktop users must now manage folder backups through Google Photos instead. Google’s web-based option allows users to select folders for backup, although the Photos website or web app needs to remain open for the process to continue in the background.

The move has frustrated some photographers and users with large libraries, who say the new workflow feels less seamless than the old Drive-based system.

What Is Google Planning Forward? And What’s Next For Users?

Users should open Google Photos on their computer, choose Create > Add photos > Back up folders, select their required folders, and verify the backup status. Those with large or professional photo libraries may also want a separate local or cloud backup to avoid relying on a single service.

Here’s Still A Hack To Help You Save Your Memories

If you still wish to use Google Photos backup mode for Drives, here’s a short hack that might work for you:

    • Best practical setup: Google Photos folder backup + a separate local/NAS backup. That gives you cloud protection without betting everything on one service.
    • Use other clouds: Use Microsoft storage or other such cloud backup services.
    • Use Mail ID: Use your mail id backup to send photos to another device and then back up in that device.
