The company has introduced selfie video verification as a new sign in and account recovery option, making it easier for users to regain access if they are locked out of their accounts or cannot use their usual phone or computer.
The new feature works alongside existing recovery methods such as recovery email, recovery phone number, passkeys, and recovery contacts. Google says users must set up the selfie video in advance, as it cannot be added during the account recovery process.

The new Google video verification feature requires users to record a short selfie video using their device’s camera. During the setup process, Google provides simple on screen instructions, including head movements, to capture multiple angles of the user’s face.
When users later need to recover their account, Google may ask them to record another selfie video. The system compares the new recording with the previously saved video to verify the user’s identity before granting access.
