Instagram is set to roll back a major privacy feature that it introduced not long ago. The platform will soon remove Instagram end-to-end encryption from its messaging system, a move that has surprised many users who expected stronger privacy protections across Meta’s apps.

Instead, Instagram quietly updated its help documentation to confirm that Instagram end-to-end encryption will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026. According to the updated help page, Instagram users who currently have encrypted chats will receive instructions on how to save their conversations before the feature disappears.

Instagram says affected users will see guidance that allows them to download their messages and media if they want to keep them. Once the deadline passes, the encrypted chats will no longer function with the same level of privacy.
End-to-end encryption previously guaranteed that:
- Only the people involved in the conversation could read or listen to messages
- Messages were protected from third party access
- Even Meta could not view the content of those chats
After May 9, 2026, this protection will no longer apply to Instagram messages.
