Description

With brands like Xiaomi, Realme, and Oppo enjoying the limelight in the Indian smartphone market, Samsung had to take a stand for itself. So, it launched the Galaxy A series to recapture the market where it once held the status of the Numero Uno. Today, we take a closer look at the Galaxy A50 to find out whether it’s worth your money.

The Galaxy A50 features a sleek and stylish 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Full HD Infinity-U display. It has a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a pixel density of 403 PPI. It runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) with the Samsung One UI on top. An octa-core Samsung Exynos 9610 processor powers its core. To handle graphics-intensive tasks, it gets a  Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. It has a 4000mAh battery. As for storage capacity, it comes in two storage variants – 4GB RAM/64GB internal memory and 6GB RAM/64GB internal memory (expandable up to 512GB via a microSD card).

The phone features a triple camera setting on the rear –  25MP + 5MP + 8MP cameras. At the front, you get a 25MP selfie camera. It has sensors like in-display Fingerprint Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, Accelerometer, Compass, and Gyroscope.

The Galaxy A50 is available in three colour variants – Black, Blue, and White. In India, the price of the Galaxy A50 starts at Rs. 21,490.

Expert Opinion

The Galaxy A50 is Samsung’s attempt to bounce back in the Indian market for good. Display

Perhaps the greatest aspect of the Galaxy A50 is that it brings the Super AMOLED display on a budget. The phone flaunts a beautiful 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen with Infinity-U notch. The minimalist bezels and the tiny dot notch offer an expansive and immersive viewing experience. The colours appear to pop beautifully on the screen without looking oversaturated. The display features an optical fingerprint scanner. You also get the option to switch to the  Always On display that comes with a host of custom faces. To protect the screen from scratches, smudges and accidental damages, Samsung has equipped the phone with a Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Although it is older gen protection, it is good enough to protect your phone from smudges and accidental drops.

Design

When it comes to design, the Galaxy A50 is a winner. The slim and sleek physique paired with the Infinity-U notch and glossy gradient back design give the phone a premium look-and-feel. The ‘glasstic’ back panel has a reflective coating that scatters light at various angles to create some fantastic hues. However, you should know that it is a fingerprint magnet. The back panel houses a vertically-aligned triple camera module with an LED flash located right below it.

On the front, you can only see a tiny dot-like notch and a small chin. While the volume rockers and power button lie on the right side of the frame, the left side houses the dual-SIM tray. At the bottom, you will find a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and a speaker grille.

Performance

Galaxy A50 is equipped with the powerful Samsung Exynos 9610 octa-core (2.3 GHz, Quad core, Cortex A73 + 1.7 GHz, Quad core, Cortex A53) SoC that is as potent as the Snapdragon 660. While you might think that the processor will ensure a smooth and lag-free performance all the way, it is not so. It is disappointing to say that even for basic tasks like launching apps, navigating between apps, closing apps, swiping on the Bixby screen, and photo editing, the phone tends to get quite sluggish. So, you can only imagine the performance for heavyweight games like PUBG and Asphalt 8/9.

While it is true that the processor isn’t the strongest point of the Galaxy A50, it can handle everyday tasks like calling, texting, social media browsing, etc., pretty well. However, if you are an ardent lover of phones with exceptional performance, the Galaxy A50 will leave you craving for more horsepower.

Camera

The Galaxy A50 sports a triple camera setting on the back. So, you get a 25MP primary shooter (f/1.7 aperture) for low-light, an 8MP secondary shooter (f/2.2 aperture) with a 123-degree field of view for ultra-wide shots, and a 5MP depth sensor.

In daylight, the rear cameras deliver excellent results. The 25MP primary sensor delivers fantastic stills in well-lit conditions with accurate colour reproduction and a good amount of detail. The 8MP wide-angle lens is perfect for shooting landscape shots, whereas the 5MP depth sensor offers excellent edge detection and is great for Live Focus. As for Portrait images, they have a decent bokeh effect. Overall, shots captured in daylight come out looking great and can be compared to other phones in this price range such as the Poco F1 or Vivo V15 Pro. However, when it comes to low-light shots, the camera struggles to perform. The captured images look grainy with a lot of visible noise. Another issue with the cameras is that video recording is constrained to FHD resolution, and you cannot switch between the standard and wide-angle lens while recording.

Moving on to the 25MP selfie camera, you will be satisfied with the results. It can capture great selfies with a fair share of details in well-lit settings – good enough to light up your social media profiles. But when it comes to low-light conditions, even the selfie camera fails to perform. The photos captured in low-light settings are mostly blurry.

Battery

Galaxy A50 is powered by a 4000mAh battery along with a USB Type-C port. The massive battery capacity is enough to last an entire day for normal to medium usage and routine tasks. Even if you engage in prolonged gaming and streaming sessions, charging the battery to a full 100% isn’t an issue since you get a bundled 15W charger in the box. It takes about one and a half hours for the battery to get fully charged.

It has all the essential connectivity options like the Wi-Fi 802.11, b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth v5.0, USB Type-C port, dual-SIM, FM Radio, GPS with A-GPS and Glonass, and 2G/3G/4G support.

Verdict

Considering everything that the Galaxy A50 has to offer, we have to agree that is a great mid-range smartphone under 25k. It is loaded with commendable features like the premium design, Super AMOLED display, a powerful processor, excellent user interface, and reliable battery life. While it may be one of the best phones under 25k, you can also check out POCO F1, HONOR Play, Redmi Note 7 Pro, and Realme 3 Pro.
