When Did HarmonyOS 6 Release?
The Huawei Pura 80 series launched recently, where they announced the HarmonyOS release. At the Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2025, in Dongguan, Guangdong, they revealed a few features. Right now, we will have the beta version coming on June 25, 2025. The official consumer rollout is expected to be around October to November this year. This makes sense as Huawei plans to initiate beta programs in Q3. Then we can have a stable release later in the year, as seen with previous versions like HarmonyOS NEXT (5.0).
Features of HarmonyOS 6
With HarmonyOS 6, we will see Huawei’s complete departure from Android’s AOSP framework. Although it will be based on the HarmonyOS NEXT (5.0), it will be a step ahead. It introduces a fully native ecosystem powered by Huawei’s proprietary microkernel. So here ‘s going to be smooth cross-device integrations, enhanced performance and privacy features. Here are more details on the features that I have explained in depth.

Strong Cross-Device Connectivity (Super Device):
HarmonyOS 6 will likely refine the “Super Device” functionality. This will, in turn, allow seamless task-switching between devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, and IoT devices. For example, you can start a task on your phone and continue on a Huawei MateBook or Vision TV. Latency will be minimal. This is a step ahead of Android-based systems like Realme UI 6.0 and OxygenOS 15, which rely on Google’s Nearby Share and Cast for multi-device interaction but lack the same level of ecosystem unity.
Performance and Efficiency Improvement:
Since HarmonyOS 6 will have a microkernel architecture, it is expected to leverage its use for better resource management. They promise up to 30 per cent improved system fluidity and 1.5GB of additional memory efficiency compared to HarmonyOS 4. Also, the battery life is improving by over 55 minutes of usage.
Privacy and Security Enhancements
HarmonyOS 6 is going to be strict about privacy with focussed permission management and system-level security scans. This bars unauthorised app access. HarmonyOS’s microkernel provides a modular security approach, potentially reducing vulnerabilities compared to Android’s broader attack surface.

Advanced AI Integration
With HarmonyOS 6, Huawei is adding smart AI features using their own powerful technology, called PanGu-Σ (like a brain for the phone) and MindSpore (the system that helps the brain work well).
Because of this, your Huawei phone might now be able to:
- Translate languages instantly as you’re typing or talking.
- Act like a smart assistant, reminding you of things or helping you get things done.
- Suggest useful apps or actions based on what you are doing.
Other phone companies like Realme (with Realme UI 6.0) and OnePlus (with OxygenOS 15) also have some AI features. However, Huawei’s advantage is that they build both the phone and the AI system, so everything works together more smoothly, instead of relying on outside services like Google’s AI.

Redesigned User Interface
Expect a visually refined UI with dynamic wallpapers, gravity-based animations, and immersive lighting effects. These are inspired by HarmonyOS NEXT’s central axis symmetry. It’s like the other OS in the market, but HarmonyOS 6’s ArkUI framework allows for more consistent UI rendering across diverse devices.
Native App Ecosystem Growth
HarmonyOS 6 will support over 20,000 native apps, with Huawei aiming for 100,000 by the end of 2025. While this is significantly less than Google Play’s millions of apps, Huawei has secured support from major Chinese apps like Meituan, Douyin, and Alipay. In contrast, Android-based systems like Realme UI and OxygenOS benefit from Google Play’s vast ecosystem, but HarmonyOS’s focus on native apps ensures better optimisation for Huawei hardware.

To Summarise It
HarmonyOS 6 is set to debut in Q4 2025. As far as we can see, with this release, Huawei ambitions to level up to the big competitors in the market. It is focussing on cross-device integration, performance, and privacy. The exclusive microkernel architecture and native ecosystem position it as a compelling alternative to Android-based systems like Realme UI, OxygenOS, and ColorOS. Supporting flagship devices like the Mate 70 and Pura 80 series, HarmonyOS 6 is going to strengthen Huawei’s ecosystem.
