Google plans to roll out the stable version of its next major Android update soon. The Android 14 update brings many changes and new features, including support for Ultra HDR in Google Photos. The Mountain View giant had announced the new format at the Google I/O in May. Android 14 Beta 2 added the support for UltraHDR photos, and now the company is apparently bringing it to Google Photos.

Google plans to add support for the Ultra HDR to the Google Photos app. The build code version v6.51.0.561138754 of the Photos app references this new format. According to Assemble Debug, an X (Formerly Twitter) user, a few strings in the code refer to Ultra HDR support.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) images offer better contrast and quality than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). They can showcase a broader range of colours and more brightness than regular images. Google Photos currently supports HDR format. The Ultra HDR format further enhances this by retaining much wider brightness and shadow information.

Ultra HDR, on the other hand, are 10-bit HDR images that can be seen on both HDR and non-HDR screens. Modern hardware can shoot HDR photos and pictures, but some older devices do not support this format. With Ultra HDR, you can view your HDR shots even on those devices that cannot display the format while retaining the same colour pop and contrast.

The Cupertino giant is also working with companies like Qualcomm to allow processors to optimize content made in UltraHDR.This could be the default format for uploading and downloading photos in the Google Photos app.

Currently, the company offers features like HDR effects in videos for Google One subscribers to improve the contrast and brightness in their content. Furthermore, it also provides features like Magic Eraser to help people edit their images and remove unwanted objects and people from them.
