MediaTek has announced its latest flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9300, with hardware-based Ray Tracing support. This 4nm flagship processor will compete against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple A17 Bionic Pro. It boasts new generative AI capabilities and improvements in CPU and GPU performance. Here’s everything you need to know about this new chip.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset is based on TSMC’s third-generation 4nm architecture. The octa-core processor has four Cortex X4 CPU cores running at 3.25GHz and four Cortex A720 cores clocked at 2 GHz. According to MediaTek, it is “the world’s first flagship smartphone chip to use all big cores”.

The company claims a 15 per cent improvement in single-core performance and a 40 increase in multi-core scores. Furthermore, the chip comes with an 18MB L3+SLC cache, which is 29 per cent larger than its predecessor.

The Dimensity 9300 is also power efficient, with 33 per cent power savings in multi-core compared to the MediaTek Dimensity 9200. It also supports LPDDR5T memory with 9600Mbps speed support, which the company claims is the world’s fastest smartphone memory.

Improved Display, Connectivity & ISP Support

The chipset supports up to 4K 120Hz displays or 2K displays at 180Hz, similar to “flagship 4K TVs”. Furthermore, it has dual active display support for folding phones and Google’s new Ultra HDR format support. The Dimensity 9300 also has anti-burn-in technology for OLED screens and power savings improvements, reducing consumption by 10 per cent.

For connectivity, the Dimensity 9300 has Wi-Fi-7 and Bluetooth 5.4, offering internet speeds of up to 6.5Gbps and 35ms latency on Bluetooth audio. The new 5G modem supports sub-6GHz capable with up to 7Gbps downlink speeds. Furthermore, it is 10 per cent more power efficient compared to its predecessor.

The new Imagiq 990 ISP supports up to 320-megapixel cameras with recording capped at 8K 30FPS and 4K 60FPS. It can encode videos in H.264 and HEVC with support for H.264, HEVC, VP-9 and AV1 video playback.

There is also support for 4K cinematic video recording with depth of field and bokeh effects. Furthermore, you get 100 per cent pixel-level autofocus and dual lossless auto zoom with standalone OIS.

Immortalis G720 Brings Hardware-Based Raytracing

The MediaTek Dimensity 9300 supports UFS 4.0 storage with MCQ (Multi Circular Queue), resulting in 8 per cent more power efficiency when compared to its predecessor.

When it comes to graphics performance, the Dimensity 9300 sports the 12-core Immortalis G720 MC13 GPU. It has a 2nd generation ray tracing engine with hardware-based ray tracing support.

MediaTek claims the GPU delivers 46 per cent higher peak performance, 40 power efficiency and 40 memory bandwidth savings over its predecessor. It can provide “full raytracing experiences at smooth 60 FPS” and is the first mobile chip to achieve “console-level global illumination effects”.

Dimensity 9300 Offers AI Capabilities

MediaTek claims the Dimensity 9300 has the “World’s 1st hardware-based generative AI engine with secure, personalized AI”. Furthermore, it offers 8x times faster transformed generative AI performance and 2x faster integer and floating point computing improvement.

The new APU 790 claims to offer 45 per cent more power efficiency. Furthermore, it can perform Generative AI in Stable Diffusion in less than one second with support for LLM with 33 billion parameters.

The first phones with Dimensity 9300 will arrive in the market by the end of 2023. Brands like Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus will likely use the processor in their upcoming phones. The Vivo X100 series will be the first smartphone series to use the Dimensity 9300 chip.
