Around 5 January 2026, DGCA, the governing council for airlines in India, issued a big update on carrying or using power banks and electronic items inside flights and airports.
DGCA has banned using power banks to charge phones or other gadgets during flights on Indian carriers. You also cannot plug power banks into in-seat power supply systems anymore.
Where can power banks be kept?
Power banks and spare lithium batteries are allowed only in hand luggage, and in any other luggage or case, power banks are banned on flights.
It’s not that airlines globally banned power banks outright. Still, many carriers and regulators are tightening rules, which means they are mainly prohibiting their use or charging during flights and imposing stricter carry/storage guidelines due to safety concerns.
Why Power Banks Are Banned On Flights?
The main reason, as specified by DGCA and other airline experts, is that Lithium batteries in power banks can overheat, catch fire, or explode if damaged, overcharged, or short-circuited.
