Indian mobile users may finally get relief from the frustrating 28-day recharge cycle. Under TRAI's new Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, telecom operators have to offer 30-day recharge options, meaning users following a monthly plan can make 12 recharges in a year instead of 13.

For years, many "monthly" prepaid plans have effectively lasted only 28 days. That meant customers had to recharge 13 times to maintain uninterrupted service for a full year. The new 30-day option addresses this issue by aligning the validity more closely with an actual month.

TRAI 30 Day Recharge Rule Means One Less Recharge

The math is simple in TRAI 30 Day Recharge Rule: 28 days × 13 recharge cycles can extend beyond a normal 12-month period, while a 30-day option gives consumers a much more straightforward monthly cycle.

TRAI's new framework also requires operators to provide an option that can be renewed on the same date every month. If that date does not exist in a particular month, the renewal will move to the last day of that month.

This is a welcome change for prepaid users who prefer to keep their SIM active throughout the year without having to remember an additional recharge cycle.

    More Choice for Users

TRAI 30 Day Recharge Rule go beyond 30-day validity. TRAI has also mandated Voice and SMS-only plans, with appropriate tariff reductions, for users who do not need bundled mobile data. These options are intended to give consumers more flexibility based on their usage and budget.

    So, the key changes are:

    • 30-day recharge options instead of relying only on shorter cycles.
    • 12 monthly recharges instead of 13 for users choosing a 30-day cycle.
    • Voice and SMS-only plans for customers who don't need data.
    • Monthly renewal can happen on the same date each month.

Overall, the 30-day option is a meaningful consumer-friendly change because users get a more straightforward monthly recharge cycle instead of effectively paying for an extra recharge every year.
